just stayed 2 nights at this hotel and found it very clean and comfortable and it did not break the bank.very easy to walk into town and there are lots of eating and drinking places nearby. The bar in the hotel is a great place to meet prior to going out and although we did not eat there the food looked good.

My husband and i had our wedding reception here and what can i say - everything was perfect - nothing was too much trouble for the staff. After reading some of the reviews we were a bit concerned but no - all was brilliant. Our four poster spa room was to die for - oldie and quirky and full of character. Anyone considering their wedding in colchester (or even just a few days away) should definitely consider this lovely hotel. We were also advised on checkin that rooms are being revamped and hoped no disruption but didnt hear anything. Did peek at new bathrooms though and they are really nice - ask for a refurbed room

Room Tip: asked for refurbed room as really nice

lovely character to this establishment, nice sized room and lovely bathroom, just a shame the breakfast wasn't very nice, if they can improve on the breakfast it will be worth the money .i would definately stay here again.

We stayed here for just the one night as we hadn't been to Colchester before. I noticed some of the reviews were a bit hit and miss but I have to say we found this hotel to be a lovely friendly place to stay. We stayed in one of the executive rooms which was a really good size and very clean. After a wander into the town we decided to eat at the hotel as I noticed that it had had good reviews. I'm really glad we did - the food was excellent. The staff were attentive and nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely recommend it.

We decided to have the 3 course roast lunch for mothers day and we weren't disappointed. The staff were v attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The selection on each course was varied. The portion sizes were generous and the food tasty. A very good lunch, would recommend.

Arrived at hotel Friday pm for a long weekend - a great welcome by staff on reception - checked in and told that we had been upgraded to Executive - rooms were in the recently constructed new build - the room was small - very poor lighting in the bathroom - the bed was comfortable - there was no wardrobe although (there was a small hanging space within a cupboard which also housed the safe and spare pillows) - the ironing board was just stood against the wall in the room (where in most hotels it is hidden away). Friday evening my wife and I ate in the hotel restaurant - food was excellent - especially the Surf & Turf. Breakfast on Saturday was also very good. Perhaps we was spoiled by our recent visit to Best Western Annesley House in Norwich (see previous review) where a standard was set that we which would be hard to match. The room was fine for a business person staying one night but not for a couple staying for a long weekend.

Room Tip: do not ask to be upgraded to Executive.......................!

I stayed in the newer building. My room overlooked the car park - a bit noisy - and the stairs and hall leading to my bedroom were a bit noisy. The bedroom was spotless (I even ran my finger along the skirting board). Toiletries were provided in the bathroom (downside - no heating in it!). The decor of the room was fine and the bed comfortable. At breakfast the staff were excellent as were the 2 reception staff I encountered and the bar made a superb brandy coffee for me with REAL double cream! I did not eat in the restaurant. The hotel is very old with lovely old wooden beams. This hotel is staffed by people who provide a very good service.

Room Tip: Try a "new building" bedroom away from the hotel reception entrance. Cars park there and...
