Owner description: Colchester Zoo is constantly developing and has won many awards for its work. With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. As you walk around the zoo there's plenty of play areas to try out including the indoor soft play area Jungle Tumble with a section for under 3s and all new play equipment where the kids can release their wild side! New enclosures include a walk through enclosure with butterflies and another with Rainbow Lorikeets offering visitors a chance to feed them a treat of nectar. Plus there's 'Bears of the Rising Sun', a state of the art enclosure which houses two beautiful sun bears , Jo Jo and Srey Ya. You can also come face to face with Komodo Dragons, see white rhino, giraffes, ostrich and kudu roaming together at Kingdom of the Wild and walk underwater through the 24m tunnel at the Playa Patagonia sealion pool. Learn more about the animals and see them up close by watching one of the 50 daily displays. You even get the fantastic opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes yourself and take a ride on the 'Lost Madagascar Express' road train! Don't forget to pop into the discovery centre and have a go at handling some unusual bugs or get your face painted and transform yourself into your favourite animal!

I used to enjoy Colchester Zoo but in recent years it has been absolutely wrecked. There are no longer visible fences around the enclosures. For some bizarre reason they have built these awful baking hot demountable buildings where you have to fight other visitors for a glimpse through a few windows.

What is the point of a zoo where you can't see the animals?

Furthermore the signs are miniscule, they won't let people smoke (this is outdoors remember), the sea life displays are over in under 10mins which isn't even enough time to find the relevant aquarium and the staff treat the place like a personal petting zoo where the general public are barely tolerated.

If you don't like seeing animals then you'll love this place!

Colchester Zoo is an enormous place and you need to spend a whole day or more in order to see most of it. They really care for all the animals and they all have large enclosures and most have to forage for food as they do in the wild. They do a lot for conservation and have breeding programmes. Have a wonderful educating experience..

Open spaces, glass instead of bars and you get to feed the elephants and giraffes. The lemur walkthrough is a delight - although (understandably) you can't touch them they can be quite cheeky and come very close - even with young ones. The regular timed talks are informative and fun and the keepers and volunteers are always ready to discuss an animal with you.

All the animals are kept in appropriate clean and spacious surroundings, the zoo is always improving conditions and has considerable breeding success.

Colchester Zoo just gets better year after year. We have just bought our 2 year platinum passes which offer the very best in value if you are a regular and look forward to seeing all the changes and watching the baby rhino grow.

This zoo is one of the best in the country & we have visited quite a few! Loads to see, the animals are all well cared for & have very generous enclosures. Children love it but we go as a couple too & still have a great time.
