Owner description: Colchester Zoo is constantly developing and has won many awards for its work. With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. As you walk around the zoo there's plenty of play areas to try out including the indoor soft play area Jungle Tumble with a section for under 3s and all new play equipment where the kids can release their wild side! New enclosures include a walk through enclosure with butterflies and another with Rainbow Lorikeets offering visitors a chance to feed them a treat of nectar. Plus there's 'Bears of the Rising Sun', a state of the art enclosure which houses two beautiful sun bears , Jo Jo and Srey Ya. You can also come face to face with Komodo Dragons, see white rhino, giraffes, ostrich and kudu roaming together at Kingdom of the Wild and walk underwater through the 24m tunnel at the Playa Patagonia sealion pool. Learn more about the animals and see them up close by watching one of the 50 daily displays. You even get the fantastic opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes yourself and take a ride on the 'Lost Madagascar Express' road train! Don't forget to pop into the discovery centre and have a go at handling some unusual bugs or get your face painted and transform yourself into your favourite animal!

“Fabulous day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

Main reason for going was for my wife to see the elephants. Even better you you get the chance to feed them as well as the giraffes. We spent a good 6 hours there, loads to see and I recommend getting there early for this reason. Plenty of place to eat, prices very reasonable, also places to eat picnic if you take your own. The animal enclosures are a good size and well looked after. The visitor is able to have a view without disturbing the animals. The train ride was okay, a little short considering the queuing time. This is only an observation not a criticism.
Before we visited I heard statements saying it's the best zoo in England. I FULLY AGREE!!
Having been to London Zoo and Barcelona zoo in recent years this really is top notch.

“Not just a zoo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

Not just a zoo. We visited with grandchildren on a cold day and found lots to do besides looking at the animals. The ball park was a great way to spend some time in the warm, watching the children work off some energy and have fun. Great outside play area for warmer day and theatre with story telling. Restaurants were reasonably priced. All in all a great way to spend even a cold day

Visited Colchester Zoo with the family this week and all had a lovely day out. Love the fact that you can feed the giraffes and elephants. Staff very helpful. Well worth the visit and good value for money. Will definitely return.

“Giraffetastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2013

My wife and I visited the zoo to see her adopted giraffe 'Lillie'. This was our second visit in recent years and it never disappoints as there is so much to see and do for the whole family. We particularly enjoyed the new train ride into the Lima enclosure (the two new lima babies were very cute). I enjoyed watching the Meerkats 'as usual' who were basking in the spring sunshine. The price of food and drink at such venues can always be a bit on the pricey side and so it would be wise for a family to pack a picnic and eat in one of the many allocated picnic spots throughout the zoo. Its the 50 year anniversary to the zoo this year with lots of special events planned. A great day out for young and old alike...so give it a go!

“Feels like lots of displays are under construction. Avoid week days!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013 via mobile

Felt like too many displays were 'under construction'. The food choice is really really bad and most were closed early or entirely.

The feeding times are a bit rushed and is quite hard working out a good route across zoo.

The zoo is good but needs some work.
