Owner description: Colchester Zoo is constantly developing and has won many awards for its work. With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. As you walk around the zoo there's plenty of play areas to try out including the indoor soft play area Jungle Tumble with a section for under 3s and all new play equipment where the kids can release their wild side! New enclosures include a walk through enclosure with butterflies and another with Rainbow Lorikeets offering visitors a chance to feed them a treat of nectar. Plus there's 'Bears of the Rising Sun', a state of the art enclosure which houses two beautiful sun bears , Jo Jo and Srey Ya. You can also come face to face with Komodo Dragons, see white rhino, giraffes, ostrich and kudu roaming together at Kingdom of the Wild and walk underwater through the 24m tunnel at the Playa Patagonia sealion pool. Learn more about the animals and see them up close by watching one of the 50 daily displays. You even get the fantastic opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes yourself and take a ride on the 'Lost Madagascar Express' road train! Don't forget to pop into the discovery centre and have a go at handling some unusual bugs or get your face painted and transform yourself into your favourite animal!

“Not value at the moment”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

Given the relatively high entrance price, Colchester Zoo does not offer very good value for money at the moment. So many of the exhibits are either under development or being refurbished, you can walk for several minutes without seeing an animal. Furthermore, you get the feeling that there are more play areas and eateries than exhibits.
Since our last visit, the domestic animals (rabbits, Guinea pigs etc) have been replaced by a Japanese style garden and the numbers of animals have been reduced - there were only 4 seals in the tank on the day of our visit!
I may have been spoilt by recent zoo visits in the USA and Australia, but this was a real disappointment and we will wait a while until our next visit.

“A day at the Zoo with our two Granddaughters”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013

Our Two granddaughters came to visit from Noosa Australia so we took them to Colchester Zoo for a day out . This is a perfect day out with a grate dill to see and the girl,s loved it , the only drew back we found this attraction quite expensive at £75 for the four of us by the time we had a drink .
The Zoo is very well kept and well worth a look if you have a spear day with the kids.

This a zoo for all the family we have the gold cards so been a lot. Lots of things to see and do loads of animals. It so big you would need at hole day at zoo.would say its not the best for wheelchairs and buggy's because off hills but has got some access .Big cages for the animals I think the lion cage is a bit small. At the end of you day at the zoo if your trying to avoid the gift you cant you have to walk through the gift shop. Always making cages for more animals or improvements .We love it.

“Our favourite place!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2013

I first went here about 12 years ago, but have only just thought about writing a review. We have had platinum cards for several of thoses years. My son had a party here- and the staff were very helpful, and accommodating. I would say that it's the best party he's ever had- all the children enjoyed it. He chose the penguin feed- his face was a picture- he had so much fun. It's extremely good value for money, and they always seem to be building something new- so it appears that a huge amount of profits are ploughed back into the zoo. The animals always appear well cared for, and the demonstrations and talks are always spellbinding. Just a warning- if you go in the winter/ a cold day, ensure you take a nice warm coat, and gloves etc!! If you want a day out in Colchester, I can't think of a better place to visit.

“Great day out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

We enjoyed a great day out here with the family. Fed an elephant and a giraffe.

Plenty to do and see. Had a trip on a train type vehicle with was enjoyed by all.

Hightlight was the Penguin feeding.

One negative point was that most of the food / drink stop-offs were closed and the ones that were open only had limited stock (lots of items were out of stock).

We will be back next month.
