Owner description: Colchester Zoo is constantly developing and has won many awards for its work. With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. As you walk around the zoo there's plenty of play areas to try out including the indoor soft play area Jungle Tumble with a section for under 3s and all new play equipment where the kids can release their wild side! New enclosures include a walk through enclosure with butterflies and another with Rainbow Lorikeets offering visitors a chance to feed them a treat of nectar. Plus there's 'Bears of the Rising Sun', a state of the art enclosure which houses two beautiful sun bears , Jo Jo and Srey Ya. You can also come face to face with Komodo Dragons, see white rhino, giraffes, ostrich and kudu roaming together at Kingdom of the Wild and walk underwater through the 24m tunnel at the Playa Patagonia sealion pool. Learn more about the animals and see them up close by watching one of the 50 daily displays. You even get the fantastic opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes yourself and take a ride on the 'Lost Madagascar Express' road train! Don't forget to pop into the discovery centre and have a go at handling some unusual bugs or get your face painted and transform yourself into your favourite animal!

Lots to see, will take at least a day, we live near and have a gold card, so visit often with our 2year old grandson all year. Lots undercover for too hot or wet days, some areas quite steep for wheelchairs but just pick a route to suit. Animals have plenty of space, and the Zoo is contantly being improved. Excellent day out.

A great place to spend the day. So many animals to see and the various displays and feeding times to see. There are a few hills to deal with walking round, but it keeps you fit. Great for all ages, and well worth more than 1 visit.

myself, partner and son went to essex in August 2012 to visit family.
We came from Plymouth devon and we were a bit sceptic of the price!... until we got inside.... we spent all day there, there was soooo much to do. In devon we have a paignton zoo, pennywell farm and Plymouth aquarium.... Colchester zoo has all of these style places in one place so your actually saving money!!!
I loved the elephant and girafe feed, wow such an experience, the petting area with the horse and goats, and up close and personal with the orangutan... the seal show was amazing too and the gift shop...
Only pitfall was shame the staff were not smiling much, but saying that, it was a v hot day!!!
Will visit again for sure. 5 stars all round

I can remember when the Tropeanos took over this zoo. They changed it from a horrible place to one of the world's top zoos, I love this zoo. It is almost impossible to see everything in one day. From the tiniest leafcutter ants to the massive elephants all are well cared for and stimulated to the very highest level, Lovely grounds and a relaxing train ride,
