Owner description: Colchester Zoo is constantly developing and has won many awards for its work. With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. As you walk around the zoo there's plenty of play areas to try out including the indoor soft play area Jungle Tumble with a section for under 3s and all new play equipment where the kids can release their wild side! New enclosures include a walk through enclosure with butterflies and another with Rainbow Lorikeets offering visitors a chance to feed them a treat of nectar. Plus there's 'Bears of the Rising Sun', a state of the art enclosure which houses two beautiful sun bears , Jo Jo and Srey Ya. You can also come face to face with Komodo Dragons, see white rhino, giraffes, ostrich and kudu roaming together at Kingdom of the Wild and walk underwater through the 24m tunnel at the Playa Patagonia sealion pool. Learn more about the animals and see them up close by watching one of the 50 daily displays. You even get the fantastic opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes yourself and take a ride on the 'Lost Madagascar Express' road train! Don't forget to pop into the discovery centre and have a go at handling some unusual bugs or get your face painted and transform yourself into your favourite animal!

Had a great day today at the zoo with my 3 grandsons and family. This is our 8th year visiting at Christmas as well as our summer visits. A very good value day out with a present from Santa included in the entrance price. Santa's grotto is brilliant and the boys are never rushed with their chat with Santa. The gifts are always good and this year the animal books were excellent! Although it rained all day it didn't spoil our visit. There is so much to see and we can never fit it all in. Food is good and reasonably priced. There are always plenty of staff on hand to answer any questions about the animals and they are helpful and friendly. New attractions are always planned. Will be back again next year!

Colchester Zoo is an excellent place to see all the wide range of animals from every corner of the planet!
Also a very educational zoo, where you can be a keeper for the day!

We took two of our grandchildren to the Zoo Christmas Grotto. It was a bitterly cold day, but was packed, as you might expect. We queued for about an hour before reaching Father Christmas, the last half of which was thankfully inside the really well-done grotto. Santa did a good job and the pressies were about right for the kids and for the money (£5). A walk around the zoo for and hour or so was all we could take in the cold, making a mistake with the zoo pizza place overwhelmed and out of food by 1.00pm! The main cafe' / restaurant was excellent, however, dealing well with the massive crowd and offering a wide selection of hot and delicious food. Overall, a good visit, as it usually is, here.

A really enjoyable and informative place for adults and children. Not too crowded on the Friday that we visited.

Wow! We travelled a long way to visit Colchester Zoo but it was worth it. The range of animals is amazing - they have lots of different creatures, some that I have never seen before (despite being a frequent visitor to different zoos). Particular highlights include the wolves, sun bears and the range of reptiles. The enclosures are much larger than most i have seen at other zoos - Colchester seem to really care about the welfare of their animals. The presentation of even the temporary enclosure for the sun bears was far superior to that of most enclosures seen at other zoos. The talks are excellent and the keepers seem quite knowledgeable about their creatures. All staff we met were polite and helpful. The opportunity to feed elephants and giraffes was an amazing experience too - what an amazing thing to say you have done! We also ate at the Southern Fried Chicken joint, which was reasonably priced and tasted good. The zoo is quite hilly, but there is an "easiest route" for people to follow, and handrails help to support on steep gradients. I can't wait to go back another day.
