Owner description: Colchester Zoo is constantly developing and has won many awards for its work. With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. As you walk around the zoo there's plenty of play areas to try out including the indoor soft play area Jungle Tumble with a section for under 3s and all new play equipment where the kids can release their wild side! New enclosures include a walk through enclosure with butterflies and another with Rainbow Lorikeets offering visitors a chance to feed them a treat of nectar. Plus there's 'Bears of the Rising Sun', a state of the art enclosure which houses two beautiful sun bears , Jo Jo and Srey Ya. You can also come face to face with Komodo Dragons, see white rhino, giraffes, ostrich and kudu roaming together at Kingdom of the Wild and walk underwater through the 24m tunnel at the Playa Patagonia sealion pool. Learn more about the animals and see them up close by watching one of the 50 daily displays. You even get the fantastic opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes yourself and take a ride on the 'Lost Madagascar Express' road train! Don't forget to pop into the discovery centre and have a go at handling some unusual bugs or get your face painted and transform yourself into your favourite animal!

“Cold But Friendly At The Zoo”
Reviewed December 21, 2012

We took two of our grandchildren to the Zoo Christmas Grotto. It was a bitterly cold day, but was packed, as you might expect. We queued for about an hour before reaching Father Christmas, the last half of which was thankfully inside the really well-done grotto. Santa did a good job and the pressies were about right for the kids and for the money (£5). A walk around the zoo for and hour or so was all we could take in the cold, making a mistake with the zoo pizza place overwhelmed and out of food by 1.00pm! The main cafe' / restaurant was excellent, however, dealing well with the massive crowd and offering a wide selection of hot and delicious food. Overall, a good visit, as it usually is, here.

A really enjoyable and informative place for adults and children. Not too crowded on the Friday that we visited.

“An amazing zoo experience”
Reviewed December 15, 2012 via mobile

Wow! We travelled a long way to visit Colchester Zoo but it was worth it. The range of animals is amazing - they have lots of different creatures, some that I have never seen before (despite being a frequent visitor to different zoos). Particular highlights include the wolves, sun bears and the range of reptiles. The enclosures are much larger than most i have seen at other zoos - Colchester seem to really care about the welfare of their animals. The presentation of even the temporary enclosure for the sun bears was far superior to that of most enclosures seen at other zoos. The talks are excellent and the keepers seem quite knowledgeable about their creatures. All staff we met were polite and helpful. The opportunity to feed elephants and giraffes was an amazing experience too - what an amazing thing to say you have done! We also ate at the Southern Fried Chicken joint, which was reasonably priced and tasted good. The zoo is quite hilly, but there is an "easiest route" for people to follow, and handrails help to support on steep gradients. I can't wait to go back another day.

“Very good zoo and always improving”
Reviewed December 15, 2012

Go at least once a year and there are always improvements. Some routes round the zoo are more weelchair friendly but still take care. Also you can miss alot of you take the easier routes. I think there needs to be more choice in the outlet near to the Africa house as that's where the children wanted something more than a roll or hotdogs. Overall the zoo seems to look after the animals and well maintained.

“One of the best Zoo's in Europe”
Reviewed December 13, 2012 via mobile

This Zoo is by far the best Zoo I have ever been to ( this includes Zoo's in America and Europe). We are regular visitors to Colchester Zoo and every year my wife adopts the baby chimp Talia.

Keep up the good work and we look forward to the Sunbear enclosure opening next year.
