“Excellent food great service!”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

We booked our table for 19.45 and arrived at Banquet about 5 minutes early. They have a good sized car park and despite obviously being busy we still found a parking space. On walking through the doors we were given a friendly greeting and after coats being taken were shown promptly to our table.

Banquet is certainly not a 'run of the mill' Chinese restaurant, so do not expect a cheap meal...that is not going to happen! What you do get is beautifully fresh food that has been cooked to perfection, attentive service from a diligent waiting team and a great friendly atmosphere.

As already alluded to, it was obvious from the number of cars in the car park that they were very busy and this was confirmed on entering the restaurant. My wife and daughter were wondering about how good the service would be...no cause for concern! Orders for drinks were taken and menus given out, orders for food were taken and after a sociable wait, our starters arrived. We opted on the Banquet mixed Hors d'ouvres a splendid combination of Sesame Prawn Toasts, the lightest and tastiest spring rolls I have ever eaten, Chicken Satays and Honey Glazed spicy spare ribs beautifully presented with a satay dipping sauce and deep fried 'seaweed'. Again an adequate 'breathing space' was allowed by the staff before our next course of Aromatic Crispy Duck. Twelve pancakes and adequate Hoy Sin sauce, cucumber and spring onions made for a pleasant second course. We chose four seperate dishes for the main course together with Banquets special fried rice. The only slight let down was the sizzling beef in a cantonese sauce which to be quite frank was somewhat lacking in flavour, BUT was still the same high quality as all the other food.

My daughter talked me into trying the Vanilla Crème Delight with Chocolate Ice Cream for desert. Now that is a serious desert that you just want to keep on eating!

It is worth noting for those with younger children that the restaurant has a strict policy regarding when familys with young children may be in the restaurant. A good idea that maybe other restaurants could learn from!

As I said, not a cheap and cheerful Chinese, but a Restaurant for those who want to enjoy probably the best Chinese food in Essex!

I couldnt fault our experience, the waiters were attentive, the food was lovely and reasonably priced and the middle span so we could share our food. Loved it.

“First class Chinese”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Absolutely wonderful food, albeit expensive, but definitely worth it as the food is fabulous. Great atmoshphere, always busy. Not the best position (next to Wyevales) but the inside decor and ambience is great and the restaurant also has a fab outdoor seating area. Staff very friendly. There is a policy re children under 7 not being allowed in the restaurant after 7:30 but I think this is a fair request (I do have young children - and by that time of night I want them in bed!!!). Would recommend a visit!

“Banquet fit for a King”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Exactly why Colchester should be blessed with such an outstanding Chinese restaurant as The Banquet is beyond us – we are just glad that it’s on our doorstep. But it’s not just Colcestrians who benefit from, and take advantage of, The Banquet – diners quite literally travel from miles to sample its delights.

The menu might not be that different to many Chinese restaurants – after all, you can get spare ribs, crispy duck, sweet and sour pork, sizzling dishes, shredded crispy chilli beef et al – but even these “run of the mill” dishes seem to be a cut above.

Some of the more unusual dishes include pan fried cod fillets with sweet soy sauce, stewed aubergine with minced pork hot pot (one of a variety of hot pots) and sautéed pork shop with chilli, salt and lemon grass, while personal favourites include sautéed king prawns with garlic and chilli, steamed king prawns with mashed garlic and crispy roast belly pork served with flaming Sambuca.

Whatever you choose, you are hard put to find its equal in the area. A couple of words of warning though – it’s far from cheap and you have to book at weekends whether you are eating in the evening or lunchtime while service is very good, sometimes bordering on the over-zealous.

If you haven’t yet been to The Banquet 1408 treat yourself – there’s a good chance you’ll keep going back!
