We booked our table for 19.45 and arrived at Banquet about 5 minutes early. They have a good sized car park and despite obviously being busy we still found a parking space. On walking through the doors we were given a friendly greeting and after coats being taken were shown promptly to our table.
Banquet is certainly not a 'run of the mill' Chinese restaurant, so do not expect a cheap meal...that is not going to happen! What you do get is beautifully fresh food that has been cooked to perfection, attentive service from a diligent waiting team and a great friendly atmosphere.
As already alluded to, it was obvious from the number of cars in the car park that they were very busy and this was confirmed on entering the restaurant. My wife and daughter were wondering about how good the service would be...no cause for concern! Orders for drinks were taken and menus given out, orders for food were taken and after a sociable wait, our starters arrived. We opted on the Banquet mixed Hors d'ouvres a splendid combination of Sesame Prawn Toasts, the lightest and tastiest spring rolls I have ever eaten, Chicken Satays and Honey Glazed spicy spare ribs beautifully presented with a satay dipping sauce and deep fried 'seaweed'. Again an adequate 'breathing space' was allowed by the staff before our next course of Aromatic Crispy Duck. Twelve pancakes and adequate Hoy Sin sauce, cucumber and spring onions made for a pleasant second course. We chose four seperate dishes for the main course together with Banquets special fried rice. The only slight let down was the sizzling beef in a cantonese sauce which to be quite frank was somewhat lacking in flavour, BUT was still the same high quality as all the other food.
My daughter talked me into trying the Vanilla Crème Delight with Chocolate Ice Cream for desert. Now that is a serious desert that you just want to keep on eating!
It is worth noting for those with younger children that the restaurant has a strict policy regarding when familys with young children may be in the restaurant. A good idea that maybe other restaurants could learn from!
As I said, not a cheap and cheerful Chinese, but a Restaurant for those who want to enjoy probably the best Chinese food in Essex!
