“Very disappointing tour of the house.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2013

Over the years I have visited many stately homes, museums, galleries and palaces in a range of countries. I'm afraid the quality of the tour today was the worst I have ever experienced. The guide read from notes and her communication and literacy skills would have made it difficult for a foreign visitor to understand. I appreciate that the guides do thus on a voluntary basis but training must be given to ensure visitors are informed in a lively and informative way. The house and it's architecture is interesting but the lack of furniture and furnishings means that the guides must be able to paint a picture to stimulate the imagination. With advanced booking, I had expected a tour of the property to be something special and to be only shown 4/5 rooms was very disappointing and not value for money.

With regard to your recent visit to Wentworth Woodhouse, I have to say I am at loss to understand how you say you were only shown four or five rooms as the shortest of our tours shows a minimum of ten rooms and our longest shows at least twenty?
We find that most of our visitors appreciate being able to view our rooms without furnishings and paintings, as in most houses that are full of artefacts you tend to miss the architectural design and proportions of the room, it’s up to our guests to stimulate their own imagination as after all we are sharing information, not delivering a lecture!
As I’m sure you are aware we are still in the very early infancy of the opening of Wentworth Woodhouse to the general public and we feel that learning on the job is the best way forward. But as I’m sure you appreciate there is a lot to learn? And we all learn at different levels.
I’m not quite sure what you are referring to by your comment on communication and literacy skills with respect to our foreign visitors, but we are a Yorkshire based Country House and try where possible to use local people and services. Even the BBC does not use the Queen’s English these days

“Have your questions ready”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2013

After reading Black Diamonds I was very keen to look round. The Fitzwilliam Tour took more than 2 hours and just to see the Marble Saloon in itself was very satisfying. The house is vast and very much a project in progress, as confirmed by the number of workmen around. We were shown around by Reg, who did a great job, making the trip interesting and entertaining.
I would have liked to have had a few questions answered, with reference to the book, so I recommend you go armed with your questions, to put to your guide, as there wasn't a specific opportunity at the end of the tour. You will find some intriguing snippets if you do enquire!

Many thanks for your comments re your recent visit to Wentworth and especially your praise of Reg. usually after our tours our guides and volunteers are around in the Pillared Hall to chat to our visitors, and we always welcome our visitors questions. Whilst Black Diamonds is a very good book, we would recommend either our own Guide Book or perhaps the excellent book published by the Fitzwilliam Wentworth Estates "The Wentworths of Wentworth, The Fitzwilliam (Wentworth) Estates & The Wentworth Monuments by Geoffrey Howse available both from us and other locations in Wentworth Village.

“A little dissapointed .”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

This was a joint birthday treat for myself and my boyfriend. He had always wanted a look round since being a young boy. And when we finally got the chance to look around this beautiful building, what a bit of a let down it was. We expected to see a few of the rooms finished at least. ( WE KNOW ITS A WORK IN PROGRESS) . Robert our guide was brilliant and really made the tour , we would have happily paid extra to listen to him and learn of some of his memories of years gone by . What a credit he really is. While the tour inside was not too bad, the outside was awful. The man who was giving us the tour was very quietly spoken and seemed to rush round ,bearing in mind there were a few senior people with walking sticks amongst us. We did miss some of the talks he gave and he did not seem the least interested in the people lagging behind had missed out. It had been raining heavy and the ground was quite wet and slippery in some areas. All in all we are glad we went , but we wont be going back any-time soon. The group was far too big and the outside tour was a waste of time. It was mentioned that in 5 to 10 years time it will not be the same building , so maybe then it would be the right time to go back .........oh there is a shop to buy goods , but no one on the till , so we left empty handed, which was a shame.

Thank you for your review of your recent visit to Wentworth Woodhouse, especially your praise of Bob, who is excellent. I'm not quite sure what you mean as expecting to see rooms finished, as restoration has been done in some rooms, but a halt was called by our architects whist we address the major problem of subsidence! Perhaps you expected to see rooms furnished? Which is far from the case at Wentworth, in fact most of our visitors comment on how they appreciate being able to see the unfurnished rooms, in order to appreciate the architecture and decoration!
I'm sorry you did not enjoy your tour of the private gardens of Wentworth Woodhouse, whilst we do try to keep the group together, we do find that the group spreads out especially on the terrace, and because we are outside our voices do not carry as well as they do inside a room! As it is a private garden and most of the walking is on grass and not on hard surfaces the weather does have an impact on the ground, that's why we usually suggest appropriate footwear for the tour. With regard to our small shop, we are a small team and most likely they were either chatting to our visitors, showing ladies to the lavatories or helping in our small café, but if you had asked one of them for assistance? they would certainly have been more than willing to help.

“At last”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

Like others we have been waiting years to see inside this amazing house. We went on the £25 Fitzwilliam Tour on Sunday 6th October 2013. Robert was our excellent tour guide. He had worked there for over 40 years and his love of the place came over from the first minute and was very informative and entertaining.

It was wonderful weather for the garden visit too.

Worth every penny.

everything about this place is fantastic and if it ever does become a hotel and spa we will have something to be very proud of in little old Rotherham.
