Stayed one night here , our room was lovely ,just a bit noisy as people moved around the rest of the hotel ,a bit disappointing as we had asked for a room with a bath and as no contact was made we assumed we would have one we didn't.
Food and service very good ,well worth a visit

Room Tip: one with a bath

Thank you for posting a review. Your very kind comments on the food and service will certainly be passed on to the team. My apologies that your request for a bath rather than a shower was not suitably handled, I have discussed this with our reservationists and they have noted this for future bookings.

We stayed for one night in this hotel and in the end we enjoyed our visit, but it was not quite as we had expected. We stayed in a luxury room which was £160 a night, so we were assuming that the place itself as well as the room would be a cut above the average.
When we arrived we found the place was being redecorated. The hotel reception is just the bar and the bar was not fit for guests: plastic coverings and a painter working on the walls. Guests were squashed in amongst the paint. The dining room was also in the middle of a rearrangement and the tables were all over the place.
The manager agreed that we should have been warned of the work and we went away to assess the chances of finding a better hotel in the town. The George, across the road, was full, and we looked with envy at the guests reading papers in comfortable sofas by log fires.
In the end we returned to The Bull and Swan which was more orderly by this time, and viewed the room. As it was spacious and comfortable, with some charm we decided to stay.
The dining room was looking good by the time we went down to dinner and the menu was small and refined. The cooking was subtle and high class.
We were given a free bottle of house white in recompense for the earlier chaos.
Breakfast was in the bar on a rickety table with half finished walls. The menu was good, but because of the pub bar surrounding it was still not quite what you would expect at the price we paid.
All in all I would stay there again at a much reduced price, but not for £160.

Room Tip: Room 1 was pleasant and comfortable with some character and charm. It is on the High Street though a...

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. My apologies once again that you were not informed of the scheduled work prior to your visit; this was an internal communication error following which we have changed the way we pass on information to the reservation team so that they are fully briefed. Our head chef was most pleased to hear that you enjoyed dining from his brand new specials menu in the evening.

The Bull and Swan is a really nice hotel, the rooms are nicely decorated and have lovely things like proper coffee rather than instant, and high quality tea bags, not to mention the elderflower "tipple" taster which was very nice. It was also spotlessly clean and the bed comfortable. Service is friendly and good. What let this place down for me was the food. We had lunch when we arrived. The two roasts came within 5 minutes from ordering, and I am sorry to say that they weren't any better than what you'd expect in a Wetherspoons, in my opinion..quite disappointing especially considering the high price.
Breakfast overall was ok: poached eggs were overcooked and my hollandaise had split, but on the positive side there are some nice touches like cold meat and cheeses, good quality jams and coffee. I suspect that it is a matter of the kitchen staff having a bad couple of days. I certainly think the hotel is lovely and it is a shame that the food isn't as good.

Thank you for your kind review of your room; I was thrilled to hear you enjoyed the ‘quirky’ little extras, the complimentary organic elderflower tipple being one of them. However, I am hugely disappointed that the food throughout your stay was not to our usual high standards. I do hope you give us another try so that we are able to show what we can offer in terms of great service and food to match.

Really good value alternative to the George. We needed a Sunday night over and tried to book the George well in advance but it was full. It was half the price at the Bull and good value for money. Service helpful and friendly. Breakfast excellent. Evening meal was unusual because we ate after the 6 -7 pm meal deal and found it a bit lonely on our own. Nevertheless the bream was fresh a nd tasty as was the soup for starter. Interesting history about the Bedlam club, which is now the restaurant. We had a front bedroom which was tasteful and ' antiquey' just a little noisy when the morning traffic got going. Parking in the courtyard may be challenging for those of a nervous disposition!

It was a pleasure to read your review and I absolutely appreciate you taking the time to post feedback. The entrance to our car park is indeed rather narrow; those a little less brave are most welcome to make use of the large car park at our sister hotel, The William Cecil, which is only just up the road. I do hope you return to us soon.

Just got back from an overnight stay at The Bull & Swan - what a wonderful place! Fantastic room - we stayed in The Stag - great size, comfortable beds, well stocked tea tray and the mini bottle of elderflower vodka was a welcome touch. The staff were great - in particular the very hard working bearded man who checked us in, moved our bags, took our drinks order, served us lunch and breakfast and generally put up with us (we were a very noisy and demanding party!).

The pub has a small car park and is really well situated (about a 5 minute walk from the centre of Stamford). The real ale was excellent (wide selection) and the food delicious.

I only have one small niggle - the pillows were too flat and consequently I didn't have the best nights sleep. If I'd checked before bedtime, I would have asked for an extra one and there probably wouldn't have been a problem.

Great hotel - would highly recommend.

We stayed here last night, in the Lyon room. As mentioned before the room has no shower, and the bath is in the room. The little bathroom is very cold, There was no plug next to the mirror for drying hair, although after asking if the other half wanted to come downstairs and use the tiolets in the bar, the nice girl provided an extension lead.

I was dissapointed overall with the little things that were missing when you pay over a £100 for a room. I have stayed in many that have been better for less money. I would have been far happier if i had paid about £70.

On a good note the food was excellent and very reasonably priced, and breakfast was also excellent.

Once upon a time there was a drinking club at Burghley House. It was founded by The 5th Earl of Exeter in 1684 and it was called The Honourable Order of Little Bedlam. It had an eclectic bunch of members: The Baptist Earl of Gainsborough was known as Greyhound, The Hon Charles Bertie was The Stag and The Earl of Denbigh was Tyger amongst other nefarious characters. They would have drunk locally brewed ales, feasted on Burghley Estate and other local produce and created total bedlam. Things have a habit of coming round and we are delighted to invite you to dine on our local produce, sup our fine ales and obviously behave very, very well! ... more   less
