Lovely village location. Characterful building. Homely interior decor. Mouthwatering menu.
Then......absolutely dreadful food. Dreadful. What a huge disappointment.

(Can't vouch for the accommodation, and traffic wasn't an issue for us, when we went between Christmas & New Year).

The staff were friendly from beginning to end. Service was excellent at dinner and the meal was great (we both had steak which was perfectly cooked). There were two disappointments. One was the attention to detail lacking in the room - no glasses for a drink, no plug in the basin, only one towel per person (although the manager was very happy to supply more when we asked). There were no finishing touches that make the price of the room more acceptable. The room was being refurbished and so there was still a little painting to be done, radiators still not fitted and no towel rail. I just think perhaps they needed to finish the refit before renting out the room! We did feedback to the manager who was very gracious and said she would take the comments on board. My second problem and the reason that I wouldn't stay here again, is the road noise. My fault for not checking the location. I live in a very quiet corner of a very quiet village, so the A road running very close to the back of this hotel made it difficult to sleep. Perhaps some of the refurbishment money should have been spent on soundproofing the room!

Room Tip: Room 7 was noisy.

What's happened to the Royal Oak;visited today Sunday for lunch; no regular staff present; waited patiently for 10 mins and no one acknowledged us at the bar ; guy behind the bar was flapping desperately with orders and was clueless; appeared to have problems with an order for 2 coffees; no sign of being served so we left; great disappointment for this normally great pub; what happened to the marquee???

We have never stayed at the Royal Oak as it isn't so very far from our home. However, I had my birthday lunch there this year and cannot fault either the food or the friendliness of the reception. We were extra fortunate to visit on one of the few really good days of late spring, when this pleasant country inn had a beautiful view overlooking trees, fields and sheep. The menu wasn't huge but the choice was adequate and there were some additional specials on the day board. Our order was well prepared and served promptly with a smile. What more can one ask?

We stopped here for a light lunch to round off a sisterly shopping trip. In contrast to the freezing weather outside we were warmly welcomed inside. We were able to relax with an aperitif on the leather sofas by the fire while our table was made ready.

There was a large choice of sandwiches and light snacks available on the bar menu, which made choosing very tricky indeed! I opted for the Eggs Benedict whilst my sisters chose sandwiches. The sandwiches were made with local Barnwell bread and served with chips. My eggs were cooked to perfection on a tasty ciabatta.

Choosing a lighter main course cunningly gave us plenty of room to sample the extensive desserts menu. The two of us indulging in dessert both selected the seasonal Eton Mess (I am not one of these culinary geeks that insists on snapping a photo of everything I eat, however it was so well presented that I did take its picture on this occasion). It was a generous portion rather than a miniature ramekin and crammed with home made meringues and a variety of fresh fruit.

Can't wait to return here and sample their Sunday lunch!

this is the restaurant that we always go to for Sunday lunch when family and friends visit and it has never once disappointed, even when we took very picky children (they will make home made chicken nuggets if you ask)

the welcome is always friendly and helpful and we have learnt to get there early and sit by the fire making our choices before being seated.

the sunday lunch menu always offers some interesting choices around the tradiitional Sunday roast plus a blackboard of specials. As a vegetarian there are always interesting choices for me and on the rare occasions that I haven't liked what is on the menu an alternative has been suggested without making me feel like I was being difficult. for children who enjoy their Sunday lunches they are also happy to do half sized proportions. and while you will be stuffed by the time you get to dessert, they are always worth having

the service is very leisurely, so if you are in a rush or looking for a quick lunch forget it, but if you want to have a nice lunch and spend time with your friends or family catching up this is hte perfect place

one night stay at the royal oak, very pleasant landlord. bar and restuarant very nice. food excellent, breakfast was nice but no sausages on the full english. room was very clean and spacious but the pillows were hard and uncomfortable to sleep on. also there was a strange humming noise all night and the traffic from the road was quite noisy.

Room Tip: maybe ask if there is a room away from the main road.
