I have been here several times for their evening dining and the meals have been excellent. We called in today for afternoon tea and they were advertising a strawberry cream tea which, according to a card on the tables, consisted of fresh strawberries, scone, clotted cream, "lovely" strawberry jam and tea or coffee. This was all for the excellent price of £4.50 each.

We were each served a dish of strawberries, a scone and a small portion of clotted cream along with our tea. I queried with the waitress regarding the lack of jam, but she said that they used to provide a pot of jam, but now the jam was in the dish with the strawberries. The dish of strawberries actually had a decorative smearing of jam around the edge which was impossible to remove to spread on the scone.

I was sure that this was not how it was meant to be served and on the way out spotted the owner who was loading a van. I told him we were disappointed and explained what had happened and he agreed that that was not how it was meant to be served and said he would sort it. However, he appeared not to say anything about it to the waitress who was now helping with the loading and I left feeling that neither had taken much notice of my complaint.

As it gets bigger the service gets worse. After the big Orangery extension it was hoped that this problem would be recognised and overcome. Alas no. Obviously not enough staff in kitchen or badly organised – one or both. We popped in for a quick lunch the other day and ordered their “pie of the day” and vegetables. We waited 50 minutes and after starting to eat the pie realized that they had given us a chicken and mushroom (there were two slices!) one instead of the beef and vegetables that we had ordered!! When we complained the waitress said it would take another long time to get the proper one so we ploughed on. Not much pleased. She offered us free desserts and that took over 20 minutes (a chocolate brownie and vanilla icecream). The excuse is always that food is “made to order” – but this is ridiculous. This is actually the THIRD time we have been served the wrong food here. Unbelievable really. When we went to pay, the cashier said we had been the only ones to complain as everyone else just “ate” the wrong pie and did not say anything!! Perhaps that says a lot about the great British public who will accept ANYTHING without complaint. Had thought that mindset had changed. Upshot is this restaurant is now “off our list”. Not worth the hassle and time spent twiddling our thumbs only to end up with the wrong food.

The Garden Kitchen holds monthly Evening Dining on the first Friday of each month, plus extra nights during December. We have visited in the past and the food has always been excellent.

Last night we attended the opening of their new Orangery and had a lovely evening. The food was excellent as usual (three courses for £23) and the atmosphere was buzzing. Service can be a little slow, but when you are enjoying your evening it does not really matter. The star of the evening was the beautiful new Orangery and I would recommend anyone to visit, either for the daytime menu, lunch or one of the special dining evenings (bookings required for the evenings.) If you visit during the day you have the added bonus of the excellent butcher's shop to visit, plus the garden centre itself, a great florists and other businesses.

To sum up, we had great food at a great price in lovely surroundings.

Three of us went to the Gourmet Dinner in July. The food was excellent - gravadlax and beetroot starters and really good fillet steak for mains. We could only manage ice-cream for dessert. Service was a puzzle. There were only three staff catering for a full house and an overlong wait between courses seemed to have no other reason than too few staff. Anyway, the food was good enough to try again next month.

Have visited this restaurant many times over the last few months since it opened. Lunches are delightful in sunny weather as they can be taken outdoors under umbrellas on the beautifully decorated large patio area. Simple British dishes offer excellent value and their wine is very modestly priced. Usually £6.95 for main course. Homemade ice creams are to die for. Try the Elderflower and Ginger.

In cooler weather eating is indoors between two rooms. Out comes such lovely warming dishes as Venison Casserole and Pork Stroganoff or Beef pie. All made with meat and game from local farms.

The Fine Dining evenings held once a month sell out as soon as they are announced. We have found that if we don't book at one dinner we miss out on the next! Interesting and imaginative menus beautifully prepared and served. All wines excellent quality and very good value. Not many restaurants where you can get a very drinkable bottle of wine for a tenner.

An added bonus after lunch is a visit to the newly opened well stocked butchers next door. As well as the local meat and game they have fab homemade pies, cakes and tarts. Their sausages are all homemade and delicious as well.
