If you are looking for a restful and peaceful B&B in beautiful surroundings, then you have come to the right place. Hartwood House is located in a magnificent private garden which you can enjoy at your leisure. On our arrival, we were welcomed with tea and delicious homemade cake laid out for us in a sunny corner of the garden. The rooms are large and comfortable with views overlooking the lush garden. Breakfast is a feast and served in the dining room which looks out into the garden.
David and Rosemary are excellent hosts and make you feel welcome the moment you arrive. They were very helpful in answering our questions about the local area and making suggestions for places to eat and visit.
We enjoyed a peaceful and restful stay and would recommend Hartwood House to all.

My husband, two daughters and I chanced upon Hartwood House after deciding a night away in Somerset would be in order. Having attempted to obtain a weekend one night booking elsewhere, without success, the owners at Hartwood were more than willing to accommodate us for a small supplement. Hartwood House is located in the heart of the countryside, through arched trees (and the odd pheasant), accessed via a country lane. On arrival, we were met by David, the owner who was happy to assist us in any way he could. He showed us to our rooms - the girls having a large airy twin with ensuite, overlooking the beautifully tended gardens. Our double room, despite not having its own ensuite (which we knew when we booked), was cosy and comfortable, with lovely homely furnishings. David asked us if we would like refreshments, which were served on the patio along with some yummy homemade cake courtesy of Rosemary. We explored the gardens and were thrilled to meet four Alpacas grazing nearby. We were joined by Sadie, a black rescue lab on a woodland walk and upon our return, Rosemary had set up croquet and boules for us to play - much merriment was had by all! The weather was not kind and our trip to Minehead later that afternoon was a wash out to say the least, but we were rewarded on our return by a lovely open fire in the "guest" sitting room, along with more of Rosemary's cake - chocolate this time! Yummy! The guest sitting room was filled with books, magazines and toys and even a rocking horse! My youngest was thrilled. We fell asleep as soon as heads hit pillows and had a wonderfully comfortable night! Breakfast was served at 8.30 in the dining room, on a table shared with other guests. Some may think this strange, but I found it quite endearing - I felt quite at home at Hartwood House and breakfast felt like we were eating with our family. The food was of incredibly good quality - an array of cereals and fruit were available, and Rosemary's fresh fruit salad with blueberries was a delight! The traditional fry up was as good as I've ever tasted and the toast and preserves to follow were sublime! I particularly fell in love with the Whortleberry jam, which is apparently made from a certain bilberry found on the moors. I was so disappointed I did not source some to bring home as I forgot :-( so I will have to organise another trip to Somerset! David was very considerate when we asked if my eldest daughter could have an alternative bread for her toast as she is allergic to some seeds, and without hesitation, provided her with something different. Tea, coffee and juice was readily available and it was wonderful to listen to David's recommendations of things to do and places to visit whilst we munched our toast. If things could go any better, they did when David asked the girls if they would like to feed the Alpacas. The girls were thrilled to be in their field "up close and personal" - what an experience. We left Hartwood feeling like we'd spent the night with family! I can't imagine there are many places where you'd feel that comfortable. I would thoroughly recommend Hartwood House to anyone looking for something a bit different - if you want home from home, there's no greater place in my opinion!

My wife and I spent five happy nights at Hartwood House. We were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed the hospitality and environment immensely. David and Rosemary are the perfect hosts - very thoughtful and kind - and able to provide recommendations should you need ideas for places to visit. For example, on return from a very wet day out in Dunster we were greeted unexpectedly at the steam train station (10 minutes walk away) by David with his car. They also gave my wife a card on her birthday and baked a delicious chocolate cake for the afternoon.

With this level of care about the comfort and satisfaction of their guests you would expect a premium price but Hartwood House offers great value for money and an authentic country house retreat. And feeding the four alpacas that they recently invested in was certainly an unexpected bonus that delighted us both!

We booked to stay here based on the reviews and were somewhat dissapointed. This is not the best B&B we have ever stayed in, not by along way. David and Rosmary are indeed wonderful hosts making you feel most welcome and have a very beautiful garden. But this is not why we choose any accomodation. The rooms are indeed large, but are tired and jaded, lacking any of the usual toiletries and other items that one expects when paying £80 per night. Afternoon tea and cake, with breakfast cooked fresh are quite common in many other B&B's. But a TV only in the guests lounge is uncommon at this price. It is more like staying with friends in their home, than a professionaly run B&B and this may appeal to some travellers but not us.

We are very sorry that walkalot55 did not enjoy their stay at Hartwood House but their comments are relevant to the way we run our business and we would want future guests to be aware of what to expect. We are not professional B and B proprietors but country house owners who are happy to welcome paying guests into our home. Reading the comments of previous guests and the absence of a Visit England rating might have prepared walkalot55 for what we offer. We do not have televisions in bedrooms but there are radios and a good selection of books and magazines. Other than soap and tissues, we do not offer cosmetic toiletries, but are happy to provide any shampoo, razors etc should guests forget to bring them. In each bedroom we provide fresh flowers, home made biscuits and good supply of beverages which are refreshed daily. Our rooms are furnished to a standard you would expect to find in a country home, not pristine but clean, comfortable and attractive. We think our pricing is very competitive for what we offer. Our aim is to treat our paying guests in a similar way to the way we would entertain our own houseguests. We find this appeals to most travellers

Rooms are very spacious with huge bathrooms. There is your own sitting room where homemade cakes are served every afternoon. I would recommend this b&b to everyone!!

probably the best B&B experience we have had in many years ... David & Rosemary have a lovely house set in beautifully tended gardens, and they enjoy sharing it with their guests. Rooms are large and comfortable, and the breakfasts and afternoon teas are well beyond one's usual expectations.
Choosing Hartwood House for our recent holiday in the Quantocks was a lucky dip, but certainly the best choice and we look forward to coming back next year.
