“Amazing Museum”
Reviewed July 20, 2013 via mobile

Traveling from Yorkshire to Crewkerne I spotted this museum on TripAdvisor and therefor diverted to Taunton en route to have a look. We were very pleased that we did because this is an absolutely fabulous museum and well worth a visit. The Roman floor mosaic was the highlight for me followed by the georgous silver spoons from 17th C
Highly recommended

“Amazing!!”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

This is an amazing museum, really worth a visit. I wondered round for almost 2 hours. It documents the development and history of Somerset over the last 80 million years or something like that - its really interesting. From before the ice age etc right up to early man, the iron age, to modern politics and wars etc. Really really interesting. Also, its free to get in so leave a donation on exit.

“IT'S FREE, What more can you ask. but this delivers more.”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

Went to the museum today with 4 members of my family, wow what an excellent museum, and what made it even better was it was free. Bye the way if your ever on holiday near Cardiff go to St Fagans that's free too and that's amazing also.

So we spent over two hours in the museum and it was a delight, the staff were excellent and polite and the artefacts on show were varied but all interesting.

The only downside was that the partings not great, if you look on Google earth it looks like parking near, but it looks as if its recently been pedestrianised, so you need to park round the corner near Halfords, so some better signage might help. All in all an amazing asset to Taunton and Somerset something they should be very proud off.

“Well Worth a Visit or Two”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

What a treat this Museum is, there is something here for all age groups. It is so well laid out and covers the history of Somerset in an interesting and informative way. It begins with Foundation Stones tracing the story of Somerset's geological past. It then shows how people began to farm the land and to demonstrate the influence of the Christian Church, warfare and disease. There are examples of objects brought to Somerset from different countries and cultures. Cider drinking bringing people together and models of various different types of transport. There is a gallery telling the story of the Monmouth Rebellion and the "Bloody Assizes" which followed. There is also the Somerset Military Museum telling the story of the regiments connected with the county of Somerset. We ran out of time to see all the exhibits but will definitely go back. There are organised events and you are given a free calendar so you can choose what may be of interest to you. The Museum's opening times are 10.00 am to 5.00 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and Bank Holiday Mondays.

“Newly re-furbished and designed.”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

This has recently had a multi-million pound makeover, and you can see where the money went. It is all beautifully designed and fashionable, but am I alone in finding it just a little soul-less? I feel the design has rather taken over from the exhibits, and I am always surprised that there are not more items on display, as it is nominally the County Museum. I fell it to be a Museum that you visit for an hour or so, and there is little to tempt you back for a second visit. You do not feel 'I must go back and have another look at any particular gallery.'
