“Pleasant hotel, good location but poor value for money.”
Reviewed July 7, 2012

The hotel looks wonderful on arrival and the reception and main communal areas all look grand and suitably imposing. However, the modern restaurant, decor in the rooms and "tasteful" soft porn on the walls of the gents toilets make you feel as though you are moving between several decades as you make use of the hotel. It does not work.

The rooms are not cheap and are not particularly well-appointed. All the basic facilities are there but there are also odd features which many hotels left behind in the 1980s, for example, glass tops used to cover the dressing table and bedside cabinets, tissue boxes placed inside material covers and dated pastel colours used throughout the room. The double bed was on the small side for a hotel.

The food in "Brazz" aspires to that of a brasserie but falls well-short and basic adherence to the menu is a real problem for them. For example, the "French Fries" were the same chips served with each meal despite stating that the meal would be served with French Fries and when tried, they had been cooked in old oil that had the taste of other foods through them. A meal for one with two courses and a glass of wine including service was about £38. Very expensive for what you got.

Breakfast at £15 per person was poor value for money and essentially a basic "full-English" but served in a pleasant dining room.

The staff were a delight. They were friendly, helpful and willing to assist - a credit to the hotel.

Room Tip: If mid-week then you should be fine with a room at the front of the hotel but weekend nights, I imag...

Me and my husband stayed here on our wedding night .

Awesome from the start . We ate in brazz for our reception and the wedding car and bridesmaids and parents were allowed to park in their car park .

The garden area was fantastic , and we used this area for our photos .

Food was brilliant in Brazz .

Nothing was too much for the staff - my wedding dress ripped when walking up the stairs - someone stood on the train. The staff ran around and found me a sewing kit .

The bedroom was absolutely lovely . We were welcomed by congratulations wine and chocolate and card. Very nice !

Bed was lovely and compfy .

Shower was awesome .

Room service at 2 in morning was great (really fancied a pint of coke!) .

The hotel walls were extremely thick - couldn't hear a thing.

Only negative was that the room was way to warm and u couldn't open the windows very wide - but as this was in October they were expecting cold weather .

All in all a fantastic experience . Would definitely recommend and stay again .

what an amazing building surrounded by other amazing buildings. Right in the centre of Taunton so everything on your doorstep ( yes including the revellers but it was a friday night and England had just got through to the next round of the Euro's) The strange thing about this place was the decor, the reception, stairs and communial areas were magnificant and in keeping with the building, the bedroom however, was like stepping into a large albiet very grand beach hut! Very strange. Anyway apart from the mad designer a great hotel and worth the money.

I stayed at the Castle Hotel for my birthday. We booked a special offer which gave us accomodation, dinner, champagne & breakfast.
We found the Hotel most welcoming. On booking I said I was in a wheel chair, they said no problem as most of their rooms were accessible they asked if I would prefer a wetroom to a standard bathroom, I thought this was most thoughtful.
When we arrived all was ready for us, champagne chilling in room etc. The checking in process was easy, confirmed dinner reservations & such like.

The room was clean, smelt fresh, beautiful view, what more could we want?

Our dinner was wonderful. Food delious service impecable. I have dietary problems & I found that they were more than happy to help & assist me in any way, just what you want when dining out.

The same attentive service was present at breakfast, I found all staff to be exceptionally helpful, nothing was too much trouble.

Over all we had a fantastic time, we left feeling really spoilt & well looked after, how you should feel after a luxury break away. At no time was my wheelchair a problem.

We highly recommend the Castle Hotel to all, disabled & able bodied a like. We both feel this is the perfect place to stay when in the Taunton area. Central location with parking, plus the felling of personal attention. We definately plan to return.

This is a perfectly located hotel for anyone who wants to step out directly into the heart of Taunton - but its central location also means that it’s not a peaceful place to spend a night. Take ear-plugs or ask for a quiet room unless you enjoy the cabaret of catfights and violent drunks up until 1.30am. (And this was mid-week!) On the positive side, the hotel is comfortable, full of history and the rooms are pleasant and clean. The staff were all very helpful and eager to please. At the time of our stay the public area in front of the hotel was being renovated so there was a little more noise than normal. We didn’t eat at the hotel but there are enough restaurants within easy walking distance to keep most people happy. Breakfast at £15.50 each was declined in favour of something more realistically priced from a nearby café. I imagine that in winter time, with the windows closed and the late-night revellers hurrying home to escape the cold, this would be a cosy and peaceful town-centre retreat

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room

At £130, I expected more from the Castle, rooms are small and very dated, public areas don't flow at all and dinner is over priced, looks reasonable at first, I had the pie which when described as lamb with red wine and rosemary sounded delicious, basically it was mince with a pastry lid and peas - no veg and potatoes these were all extra, bery disappointing! I was here on business and will source another Hotel next time!

I have stayed many times at this intriguing hotel. It is full of interesting historical features and the gardens are delightful for afternoon tea and even stage summer performances. The rooms are comfortable in a chintzy English style, although the furnishings and fittings are rather dated in a genteel shabby way! Twice I have stayed in the room over the arch which can be a bit noisy on weekend nights. The food used to be outstanding but I think times have changed and it seems to cater more for the masses than for gourmands. The waiting/bar staff seem inconsistent, some are warm and helpful, others rather reserved. The reception staff are always welcoming and helpful. One is best advised not to come by car unless truly essential, as parking is extremely limited. However transport links are excellent to and around Taunton. The location is ideal; in the midst of the shops and restaurants of the town centre, walking distance to the River Tone, the cricket ground and Vivary Park as well as the museum. A short drive to the north Somerset coast and the beautiful Somerset landscape with its attractive villages. Just be aware that Taunton can get quite rowdy at night-time on weekends.

Room Tip: Avoid the room over the arch!
