“As a restaurant should be.”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

We were staying in the area and after a walk had stumbled across The County. We had a late afternoon drink and left after looking at the menus.
The next day we decided to return for our evening meal.
We were greeted with a cheery comment and a smile by a member of staff who remembered us from the previous day.
The food and service were excellent, not speedy but relaxed and unfussy.
Salmon on samphire was perfect and my friend ate the steak and ale pie and he said it was the best pie he had ever eaten.
I had been hankering after a good ice cream all week and when I saw that liquorice ice cream was on the menu I ordered it along with chocolate chip and a blackcurrant sorbet. All three were delicious.
We ordered the cheese board and we were not disappointed . We love our cheeses and these were served beautifully. The cheese was at the correct temperature and with lovely accompaniments.
We would definitely return and would like to stay in the rooms that are available next time.
The bill came to £57 for 2 main courses, a dessert, a cheese board and a bottle of wine. A fairly expensive meal but we were happy as it reflected the quality of food we had eaten and the service we had received.

I would like to congratulate the young staff who took our order and served us. They were polite, friendly and allowed us to enjoy our meal.

“Outstanding and on our doorstep!”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

A real gem. Superb quality food, excellent service and great ambience. Perfect for a quick or a leisurely lunch, an evening meal as a couple, with friends or for a special occasion. The menu is regularly changed but with favourites remaining too. Locally sourced food, cooked to perfection - never disappoints.

“HIDDEN SECRET BUT NOT ANY MORE!”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

The County is situated on the attractive Green of Aycliffe Village. It is managed by a great couple, Stewart and Collete and since their arrival to the County they have changed the whole dining experience. The food is excellent, the staff are really well trained, polite and friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed not stuffy. Enjoy it so much I even had my Wedding Lunch there. Excellent Restaurant and just won Northumbria Pub of the Year 2013 - Congratulations.

“Must read review!”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

I don't normally write reviews but feel that this experience should be shared for others to go and enjoy. We went early on a Saturday night with my Mum who was visiting from Australia, she wanted a traditional English pub with nice surroundings!! Two points covered straight away! We went straight into the main courses and my Mum and I had the steak and Ale pie with a side order of chips and mushy peas, What can I say?? The best homemade pie with chunky cuts of steak and proper gravy, homemade chips and delicious portion of mushy peas. The fillet steak was of generous size and good quality and the fillet beef stir fry special was exceptional! Could it get any better? Yes - Puddings! Eton mess and panacotta, presentation was of a very good standard and the quality of fresh local fruit used was also of an excellent quality. Cheese board looked too good to eat and coffee's very good. All staff were extremely efficient and very friendly, fresh cold water was bought to the table as soon as we had finished the previous. The wine that was suggested was also very good. We took our 12 and 11 year old who were able to have smaller portions from the menu which is always good to have. A must visit! We will be returning.
