Very 3 star hotel. Bar unwelcoming and small, directly located in town centre with buses driving past front door. Newly refurbed. Rooms teeny but modern. Shower good. Bed comfy. Problem with sleeping. Hotel overlooks town centre. Lots of noise from revellers at night. And hourly time check from clock tower - midnight was the worst! 12 bells. Slept fitfully between bells. No minibar but hair dryer was better than my one at home.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at back to minimise town centre noise

Thank you for reviewing your stay with us. I am pleased to hear you found the bed most comfortable and the power shower to your liking. I am sorry you found the bar unwelcoming as it is often busy with shoppers and those taking advantage of our daily happy hour between 4pm and 7pm. I am sorry you were disturbed by the market clock tower bells.

I needed a hotel in Darlington at short notice, so just picked the first place that looked good. And what a find! Mercure is the franchisee brand of the Accor group, and can be a bit variable. This one is definitively at the top end of the range.

I noted that the hotel is in the centre of town, so I checked with them about parking. Right from the start, they were clear that parking was restricted, and gave me details of other options. Reception were perfect on arrival - helpful, friendly and organised.

I ate in the restaurant on the first evening - again, fantastic staff, the food was excellent, and the prices, surprisingly good.

The room was clean and well appointed, and clearly redecorated recently to a high standard.

All in all, that sums up the place - great staff, loads of personality and a slightly quirky charm about the place, all delivered to a very high standard.

I had problems booking this initially through lastminute.com but shan't hold it against the hotel. I got the same rate booking direct. The free parking that is advertised is not guaranteed we had to park in a local car park at our own cost ontop of the room cost. This also meant that I had to get up at 8am to put more money in the meter, ruining a good nights sleep. We travelled to Darlington to attend a social event and intended to check in then attend our event, firstly the car parking fiasco delayed us by half an hour. Then after we checked in and went to the room and it hadnt been cleaned and the safe was still locked from the previous occupants. We call reception and they sent the manager which took another half an hour and to add insult to injury we listened to him taking a personal call in the hall way while waiting inside the room. We were moved room as a resolution. Overall the room was good though we were on the top floor and the room got uncomfortably hot with no climate control available. We got breakfast with the price of the room which was plentiful and a good standard.

Thank you for reviewing the hotel. I am sorry you were delayed with parking. There is a 24 hour carpark within 5 minutes walk that only charges £2.50. I apologise you were allocated an unserviced room and that your room move was delayed but pleased you were happy with the clean room allocated and found our breakfast to be plentiful. We do have fans available from reception to improve your comfort.

Staff were great, free parking was full so ended up in the town pay-n-display. Room service was delivered promptly with a smile, but food was poor at best. Room was overwhelmingly noisy due to some machinery next to it, and because of the awful karaoke in the bar until 11:45pm.

Town was full of working girls and drunks. Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere.

Thank you for completing a review of the hotel and Darlington. I am delighted you found our staff to be helpful. I regret our car park was full when you arrived. There is an open car park less than 5 minutes walk from the hotel that only charges £2.50 for 24 hours. Darlington is a thriving town and can be lively at the weekends which makes it so popular.

Staff very helpful and friendly. Rooms clean modern and small ish. Shower good but hot/cold marking the wrong way round in my room.
Breakfast fulsome. Evening meal Ok, however we caused consternation when 10 people arrived for dinner at once.
Church bells ring hourly through the night and avoid a room facing the pedestrian precinct and street sweepers and reversing 'warning vehicle reversing' alerts will wake you at 0500.
On the flip side they are happy to laundry stuff and have it ready for the following week in the room.
So guys - I quick word to whoever about stopping the bells 1200-0600 and you should be ok :-)

Thank you for commenting about your recent stay. I appreciate your positive comments about our staff and bedrooms.I am sorry you were disturbed by some external noise during your stay. Next time we will allocate you a room away from the street scene which should help. We remain well placed in the town centre though there are inevitable distractions being so central.

Free parking, great staff, all really friendly including Brendan, Lewis, and the staff. Top steak, beers, just a great reception being on the road a great deal. Highly recommend!

Rooms lovely including all the usual accessories. Bar nice and well stocked. Even had a steak from the restaurant to the bar at 9.45pm.

Great little hotel right in the middle of Darlington. Room was in good condition, breakfast was great, and all in all a gem of a hotel at a decent price. Was worried that it might be a little noisy with being in the town centre, but slept like a baby!
