“in need of updating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2014

so this place is £50 a night including breakfast - so my hopes were not that high and they were met. This strikes me as somewhere that was once a really nice place 20 years ago but just isnt getting the income to keep it that way - its in need of some TLC which is a shame becasue the staff are great.

pros
its CHEAP
the staff are lovely and very helpful.
big new TV in the room
The airport doesnt seem to have any flights so no worry about the noise
it as a quiet hotel - (i think i only saw 1 other person!) - i guess in summer when there are more flights this would be different.
free parking
they have 'dog friendly rooms' - which was good as we travels with someone with a dog - they were happy for the dog in the bar as well (althoguh there was noone else, even staff in the bar)
lots of history - this place was once the RAF officers mess

cons
its shabby - holes in the walls and furniture, everything looks tierd and in need of TLC
the glasses in the bathroom were filthy and there was some stains on the decor
the shower curtain STUNK - i dont think it had EVER been cleaned
the shower was the most pathetic dribble ever.
breakfast was served 7-9.30am - we came at 9am but breakfast had obviously been sitting there since 7am as it was dryed up and the tea was cold - the staff did get us a fresh pot of tea though so that was good - shame becasue i think 2 hours earlier it would have been nice breakfast. it was so quiet it seems silly doing a buffet - cooked to order would have been better and no doubt more cost effective.

if you are looking for somewhere to put your head down for a night before an early flight then this place would do the job, but if you are looking for anything more I'm afraid that until this place is renovated then dont expect too much, but do remember its only £50 so what do you expect!

Room Tip: room 15 has a view of a brick wall!

What a lovely looking hotel inside and out. Stayed here with a friend last year and thought I'd leave a review, room was lovely after the gentleman on reception found us one that had been cleaned from the evening before. There was nothing the young man on reception wasn't happy to help us with, advising on nice local restraunts and bars to visit and assisting us with the shower which we thought was broken in the room. It was shame to hear him spoken down to the following morning by one of your female members of staff. Breakfast was nice and the bar was pleasant enough to have a quiet socialable drink before going to our rooms. All in all we'd stay here again and look forward to revisiting the area!!

This was our third stay at the St George, only this time there was a couple of disappointments.

The main issue we had was that the front door, which should be automatic was locked and you had to use all your strength to pull it open. I pulled my shoulder out trying to open the doors. When the wind is high, the doors do not work too well. This could be fixed by putting a button on both the inside and out to stop us having to use such physical force. This is the second year in a row this has happened, with no solution put in place for its guests.

The other thing that disappointed us this time, was the breakfast. The bacon was undercooked, so we stopped eating it (Even when we asked for it crispy)..... I am sure this is personal taste, and, the sausages were herb sausages, the hash browns taste like they were deep fried with the same fat as the sausages. One of the things I loved about this hotel used to be the fabulous breakfasts. So breakfast for us for the last two days was eggs, beans and mushrooms. Still good.

We weren't too pleased to see a woman in the bar with her dog either, up on the sofa were we would sit, so we decided not to go into the bar either this visit (we normally spend the last night in there playing pool). It's not good when the Over Night Door Manager, sits on his behind talking to guests in the bar, while other guests are pulling out their shoulders to try open the door.

Aha, I remembered something else. One of the main attractions of this hotel was that it still held somewhat of its history. The bar used to be a bottle green colour on the walls, which gave it some ambience and kept the history of it as an old RAF Base. These have now been changed to magnolia. What a shame.

However, these are, in our opinion minor things. We can not wait to go back, the rooms are spotless, the staff are lovely, it is still a great hotel, only maybe next time, it will be back to what it used to be which was "perfect" to us.

Room Tip: Do not stay in Suite 14, noisy water drains. You can not go wrong, all rooms are lovely and clean an...

Hi BerniceandTony
Iam sorry to hear your last stay although enjoyable had a couple of disappointments. The issue with the front doors was beyond our control due to the unusually high gale force winds which affected the whole area with the freak weather conditions.Iam sorry the breakfast was a little disappointing as we normally cater for all needs and find it surprising that your request for crispy bacon was not met .The sausages are locally sourced and have been a favourite with many of our guests and are oven cooked to retain the flavour. However on your next visit i would be pleased to offer an altrnative breakfast sausage if you let me know in advance. As we are a pet friendly hotel we have no restrictions on pets but do discourage owners from letting them on furniture. As you can see from previous reviews our reputation is built on the friendliness of our staff and i would not discourage any of my staff to converse with the guests.

Booked online on the day of our stay. When we got there theroom we booked wasnot available, however the guy on reception was fantastic, he explained the issue and resolved the problem.
When we got to the room there was only one doible bed for me and a male friend!!!
Within 2 minutes he had resolved that with a separation of the bed and extra bedding.
Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, down to earth and helpful to the hilt.
Good value food, cheap beer and reasonably good rooms for the money.
Not sure how close any facilities or local amenities were as we got there late and left early.

I stayed at the St George Hotel on business as myself and a team of crew where working at the airport and we couldn't have been put up in a better hotel for what we needed.
The staff were incredibly helpful - nothing was too much bother. We had a very early start one morning so the Chef came in half an hour earlier so that we could have breakfast before leaving the hotel. I needed some documents printing they did this willingly and even offered to take it up and deliver the documents to all the crews rooms, I also had last minute bookings and room requirements and again this was handled swiftly and with a smile.
All the staff are friendly and bubbly and very approachable so all the crew felt very welcome during their stay.
The food was lovely - we ate breakfast , lunch and dinner here and no-one could fault the food or the speed or quality of service. Two of us (including myself) had food intolerances and the chef was more than accommodating ensuring they had gluten free bread in for the mornings breakfast and they put on a gluten and dairy free soup for lunch too and this was in addition to the other options the menu already provided.
If you need to be near the airport... well you can't get any closer if you tried!
We have been back since our first visit and the standard was just as high! Joanne - the manager of the hotel was a life saver on more than one occasion helping me with a variety of errands whilst the team were working on location.
I can't thank them enough or rave about them enough- the staff really make this hotel as well as it's location!

An interesting hotel which did the job for our one night stay.
Not a bad price but that didn't include breakfast and after eating there in the evening, we decided not to have the breakfast. My burger and chips were very mediocre.
It was lovely to have a bath and shower and the room was warm and comfortable. The furniture needs some tlc and the thing we found most annoying was that there was only ONE double socket in the whole of the room, once the TV and kettle were plugged in that was it! Nowhere to plug in our phone chargers/laptop etc.
Staff on check out were brisk and didn't ask how we enjoyed our stay either, just asked if we were checking out, when we replied we were, she check we didn't owe anything and just said 'thank you'. Sounds nit picking I know, but the staff at the Holiday Inn Express the night before were much friendlier.

This is the first time I have been to this hotel, but it won't be the last. Although I was in room 13, it was a nice large room with a big marble bathroom and the first thing I saw from my window was the Maple Leaf Flag flying in the breeze. The hotel was the sergeants mess during the war for the Canadian Air force and has many photos and momentos of its past including a bronze statue of an airman at the front of the hotel - very impressive!
We had the ballroom for our event - a large well lit room with space for tables for the carvery. We had a large piece of roast beef and also a roast gammon with amazing crackling - many went back for seconds. The staff were really helpful and they had laid on a handpull for the occasion.
Plenty of free parking and easy access for equipment
It is next to Tees Valley airport, but I had a good nights sleep - maybe the planes don't fly at night.
The hotel was full, but facilities are spacious and there was no waiting at breakfast.
Definitely a little gem nand well worth a visit.

Room Tip: I had room 13, which is unusual, but it faced the front, with a good view of the flags and statue
