“Brilliant - and they also give you proper toast”
Reviewed September 15, 2010

This was the third time we have visited this hotel and often when you return, things never seem the same . Well they were better and the new manager (ex York DuVin) has addressed some of the areas that in the past were worthy of the odd niggle.
The hotel, its location, and particularly the staff made sure we had a memorable stay.
As an added bonus this is one of the few hotel chains that do not have an infernal machine where you are supposed to toast your own (poor quality) bread. Fresh toast and tea from the kitchen - the start of a perfect breakfast. Holiday Inn, Hilton, Marriot & Raddison take note...PLEASE ditch the toaster it doesn't work!!
You will be very very unlucky if you come way from here not having had an enjoyable experience .

We stayed for the weekend in early September. I can confirm that the good reviews on Trip Advisor are accurate. The decor was lovely, service excellent, good atmosphere in the bistro and bar. All in all a very good stay.

Don't get me wrong, this is a lovelly hotel in an ideal location for Poole harbour .. But you would expect it to be nice at £190.00 per night with no breakfast included !! .... What i found unnecessary were the petty charges made during our stay like :- £1.90 for the buscuits with the tea in our room .... £8.00 charge for them to take my car no more than 200 yards around the corner to a car park that resembled a building site and this ... the cracker ... adding £1 to my bill, without consulting me, for the variety club !!! Had they asked me prior to printing the bill or, had they had a collection tin on reception i would have been happy to donate but come on ... adding it to my bill then asking if it was ok with a reception full of people behind me checking out ... Not impressed !!

Stayed here on the Societe du Vin rate which includes an upgrade to a superior room, breakfast and a limited choice of dinner and wine. Hotel was very stylish and our room was beautifully decorated. Food ok. Great location just off the quay. The only thing that ruined it was the really noisy plumbing that whooshed in the pipes all night everytime any of the other guests used their bathroom which drove me up the wall at 3am!

This is the fourth Hotel du Vin that we have stayed in and it lived up to expectaions. We like the ambience which is smart, friendly good service and food but relaxed. I love having a sommelier that can recommend a wine by interpretting a taste and a budget - HdV usually have young sommeliers with an enthuiasm for their craft.
The HdV rooms are always clean with excellent fittings and the best sheets of any hotel that I have staid in (wierd I know but it does make a difference - Egyptian Cotton)
The Poole HdV is one of the newest in the chain and has been a large investment based around the old Mansion House Restaurant (which I went to some years ago and found to be a bit stuffy).
We had a standard room as booked late but were not unhappy with it - there are more "themed" rooms available.
We had been booked into the Bull in Bridport but that was not a good experience (see review) and we turned around and managed to get a late booking in Poole. The hotel is right on the old Quay which is great for boat spotting and a wander.

Had 3 nights in this hotel. It was lovely. Room excellent, and I cant stop raving about the breakfast spread. Only negative. We had a room overlooking car park and it was a trifle noisy!!

We booked one of the Sunday special deals for a treat for our wedding anniversary. We were given a very nice room with a small terrace, and a great table at the Bistro for dinner. On arrival at the Bistro we were given a glass of champagne by Graham, the assitant Bistro manager who was very charming. He continued to look after us and presented us with a plate of petit fours at the end with Happy Anniversary on it. In fact all of the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. I can recommend two nice places nearby for lunch - the first is Dermot O Leary's new restaurant in Poole harbour called Fishy Fishy (sister one to his Brighton original); the second is WestBeach in Bournemouth, an excellent restaurant right on the promenade. We didnt drive here and it was very easy to get to/from Bournemouth by train. We took one of the many boat trips around Brownsea Island - didnt have enough time to get off and wlak around the island but would like to have done. We have stayed at many Hotel du Vin's around the country and they are leagues apart of everyone else in terms of quality, value and service.
