“Where's the cleaners?”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

We booked through the hotels website and were told that we've have a family room with a double + single in the main room and an adjoining room with bunk beds . When we arrived the receptionist (who doesn't raise her head from her keyboard while talking to you) informed us that although we'd pre paid we would now have to pay an upgrade for the room that we'd been told that we already had. To be fair I still thought that this was value so I agreed to the fee and we promptly went up stairs . The room was spacious and for the money seemed fantastic value with a pleasant view of the harbour from the balcony. Unfortunately the lock to the balcony was broken so for the first hour or so we couldn't leave our belongings in the room unattended. A member of staff did swap our lock with an adjoining rooms so we headed to the pool. When we came back we opened up the sofa bed for our youngest to sleep in. Being a 4 star hotel I didn't expect to see the blood stained sheets that were covered in glitter too with a rather large yellow stain aswell . I hate moaning and have never had to ask to move rooms before but I couldn't put my 2 year old on such a soiled bed so housekeeping changed the mattress and sheets so we agreed to stay. I must add that while I was talking to reception about the dirty bed another couple were leaving to go to another hotel because they had dirty sheets too. This helped in my situation as I did feel rather embarrassed having to moan.
Later my son pushed one his toy cars under the main bed and my wife moved the bed to retrieve it. Oh my word, why can't cleaners clean? They must be capable of moving a bed to Hoover under it. It was discussing as was the filth in the drawers of the dresser and the filthy shower curtain that we discovered later while showering.
I've loved this area since visiting 36 yrs ago and have had countless holidays/breaks here without fault.
This hotel does sit in the most beautiful location and has a great "beach club" but without decent cleaners and a revamp I fear for its future.
When we departed the following morning we had another upgrade charge to the room and again it was only small so even though the receptionist who again couldn't raise her head from her computer didn't know what it was for I was wanting to get out ASAP so i just paid it . My wife however decided to get to the bottom of this fee and some ten minutes later the receptionist admitted that this shouldn't have been added so it was refunded.
Gutted that such an iconic hotel is now this bad. Some decent cleaners and a bit of personality at reception would have made all the difference. If these two thing were addressed our stay would have been superb value and we would have been returning very regularly

We have recently returned from a Spring break for two offer booked on the Sandbanks hotel website. The hotel commands an excellent position right on the beach and you obviously pay a premium for this privilege. There are some very harsh reviews of this hotel and this is, in many aspects, is unjustified. The harbour and beach views are excellent and the buffet breakfast was ample. (No buffet scrambled eggs though?). We requested an early check in and reception duly obliged. The double room with balcony over Poole harbour was warm and comfortable with numerous sailing vessels pleasing to the eye. Staff were mostly courteous and welcoming and evening dinner was fine without being exceptional. If you look for faults in this hotel you will find a few, but make no mistake, this is a good hotel with excellent views across the sandbanks peninsula.

Room Tip: Poole harbour with balcony or sandbanks beach with balcony essential.

A big Thank you to the Funsters team for entertaining the kids so brilliantly. You gave them a fabulous holiday and mum and dad had a break. The Funsters Entertainers are full of energy, ideas, silliness, enthusiasm, creativity ...and the really love entertaining everyone. A great asset to the hotel.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view without car park!

We stayed here a few weeks ago early in the easter holidays - three of us in a family room which was refreshingly spcaious with a small separate room for my daughter. The bathroom was also spacious and everythin was nice and clean - I am fussy about this and as I run a B&B I know what to look for!
The staff were all helpful and willing to please - even when we wanted the games room opened up to play pool! Breakfast was also very good with good choice and variety, even for a gluten free diet!
The location is great, right on the beautiful beach! (The only thing we didn't have was warm weather, but there was no rain and we were out and about all the time in lovely Poole).

Room Tip: The beach view rooms are spacious!

When booking we were promised:

- a quiet room a long way away from the wedding reception taking place on the same evening as our arrival
- an easy-access room for our 90 year-old relative

Guess what? We were kept up 'til 1am by every detail of the utterly dire wedding singer; and our 90 year-old relative was allocated a room with access only via stairs

These guys should know better, unless they think that an out of tune version of 'wake me up before you go-go, segued like a train crash into 'auld lang syne', is a selling point

Room Tip: most rooms have a sea view; some have dreadful noise piped in from the function rooms

Thank you for your review 604elsied, we can see that this is your first review, welcome to tripadvisor. It is unfortunate that you found noise disturbance to be a problem during your stay. We try our best to minimise the impact of noise from wedding functions and purposely try to accommodate customers as far away from functions possible. You may understand that this is not always easily done, especially when the hotel is fully booked. We do however inform guests about functions taking place even prior to booking, this information is then again sent out with a warning of possible noise disturbance during your stay in the booking confirmation email.
Regrettably, it appears you did not mention your issues to our staff, both issues may had been avoided that way.
If you have any further queries, please do get in touch.

I am on the road every week, staying in hotels up and down the country and have to warn others that this hotel has a class of rooms that are so small they can hardly fit a single bed into them. Look out because there is no notification until you open the door and realise a prison cell is bigger.
The views and the closeness to the sea is a big plus. i found the staff to be very helpful if a little inexperienced. Book a double room and everything is okay don't end up in a tiny single room.

Room Tip: Always book a double, dont take for granted that it will be done for you.

Thank you for your review GerryR847. While we welcome positive criticism, none of our rooms are as small as you described, yet, we have much larger rooms on offer. It is unfortunate that you never raised any issues with us directly, as our reception team would have given you a room more suitable for your requirements. You booked a single room and you did not raise any issues with our staff during your visit. It is always encouraged to speak to staff first, as they are the ones that can make the improvements that you desire.
We are glad that you found our staff helpful; we take pride in our staff’s ability to deal with all customer requests efficiently. We would very much welcome if you stayed with us again.
