After finding out the venue was to be the rising sun for our firms Christmas meal I decided to have a look on trip adviser to see what the reviews were like as I've not been in the pub since it was the brewers I have to say on reading the negative reviews we were a little bit concerned as to what we had let ourselves in for well we needn't have worried at all the food was excellent healthy portions and the service was cheerfull and excellent we couldn't fault it and all left several hours later well fed and well oiled
Well done rising sun we shall definitely consider booking again next year
P.s the bread and butter pudding was to die for

“exemplary service”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

I have eaten here, whilst on business, both alone and with colleagues a number of times throughout November. The service is impeccable - the staff apart from being very pleasant and efficient, really know the dishes on offer and are confident in responding to any slight alteration to dishes and to our other requests.
Bar service is equally as good and when eating alone, newsapapers or a table in the bar to watch football are offered without prompting. Finer touches which are very rarely offered elsewhere.
All the dishes we ordered were excellent in quality, texture, flavour and presentation. Fish dishes are particularly good here. The menu is supplemented by a number of inventive dishes on the specials blackboard.
The atmosphere is really great resulting in a positive dining experience.
The Rising Sun maybe not be the cheapest place around but it delivers every time on value for money.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

We visited this restaurant for lunch and sat at a very nice table in pleasant surroundings. The staff were attentive and helpful. My wife ordered the chicken pâté and we both ordered mussels in a mariniere sauce. We both tried the pâté and agreed that it was really not very nice. This was left and the restaurant to its credit did not charge us for this item but did make the point that there was nothing wrong with the pâté as its taste, which to us was unpleasant, was normal for the dish. The moules which we both ordered although nicely presented were really quite bland, lacked sufficient seasoning and we both felt that there was an absence of garlic in the dish. My Moroccan lamb dish was ok but the lamb was overwhelmed by the strong tomato sauce that it came with. I accept that it is difficult for restaurants to please everybody but going out to lunch is not something you do every day and we left this restaurant feeling quite disappointed.

“The Rising Review”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

A group of four discerning gentlemen between the age 20 - 30 and well versed in dining out, whether it be fine dining or kebabs at 3 am. Set off for a meal at The Rising Sun Poole (Gastro Pub) on a Tuesday evening. We did not pre-book a table but the waitress found us a table in the bar area which was fine. The parking is right outside the pub but it is pay and display. We found the pub generally welcoming and nicely decorated with a relaxed ambience, our waitress was also welcoming, polite, knew the menu and was happy to banter with us at the table, the service was good throughout. The food was good quality and reasonably priced across the board, between us we had:
Starters:
Scotch egg with pea puree - This was a really nice tasty pub dish, well presented on a slate plate. Quite filling. Being a man of huge appetite for hearty protein this was a great starter.
Whitebait - fine but not outstanding, good portion size though (almost enough to share).
Chicken liver pate - Well seasoned, healthy sized portion with good flavour coming from the caramelised red onion to compliment the pate.
Mains:
Moroccan Lamb - Was a bit of a disappointment considering the standard of the other dishes. The gemmed couscous was well cooked and the side of flatbread a welcome addition; however, the dish can be summed up by too much apricot not enough lamb.
Pork belly - The meat was good, the crackling was not as good (not really crackling). I've had better kale but the mash was outstanding with chopped black pudding mixed in. The dish was well presented, looked appetising and the portion was hearty .
Mussels in marinara - A good dish with a good side of fries with only one real however; not a big enough portion.
Sea bass in clam chowder - The dish was excellent, sea bass well cooked and seasoned in a first-rate chowder, it was the highest priced but was worth it.
Drinks and desert:
There is a selection of ale, but two out of three were off, lucky we like Doom Bar! There was also only two single malts but the waitress served whiskey as it should be in a tumbler with a dash of water, there was plenty of draught lagers and ciders. We did not have wine. We also had a Chocolate fondant, which was nice and rich but perhaps too much after two previous courses.

To conclude we had a good night out, modern gastro pub cuisine that doesn't measure up to some of the higher end restaurants in the area but was really good for what it was. We would recommend the Rising Sun as a good pub to meet friends or business acquaintances for a bite to eat and a good conversation without needing the effort or the price of a restaurant. Our best dishes were the Scotch Egg starter and the Sea bass main.

“a quick meal before music”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

I went with 2 friends and my partner for a birthday meal before going to here some music at The Lighthouse. I had said when I booked that we only had an hour. The staff clearly had a note of this and were very organised and attentive.
Portions were generous, mussels plump and tasty, fish not overcooked. A good selection of wines by the glass.
We had 2 courses and were in and out in an hour - clearly people usually take longer and we will be back to take our time.
