“Feels a bit run down, Chilli Festival too busy !”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

Last time I visited quite a few years ago the Chilli Festival was a pleasant afternoon spent in beautiful surroundings. This year decided to visit again for the festival but it was a very different experience. It was expensive to get in - £7.50 each, and the place was so packed it was diffciult to get around. The stalls were very close together and there were many places were we had to queue to get through. Difficult to get near many of the stalls, great long queues for food, limited seating - all full.
The place felt a bit run down with fenced off areas where the steps were broken, gardens unremarkable. We only stayed an hour, then decided to cut our losses and find a local pub for lunch.

“Chilli festival!”
Reviewed August 19, 2013 via mobile

The best thing about this place has to be the chilli festival! Expensive to get in though I might add. But it's a fun family day out. Sit on the grass and eat some chilli chocolate while drinking your chilli beer. Gardens are a nice walk too. I'd recommend chilli fest in September though!

“Bennington Lordship snowdrops”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

The best time to visit is snowdrop season. They are all over the estate. However, if you visit Bennington Church, worth a visit in itself, you can look over the wall and have a good look at them for nothing!

“A very pleasant afternoon.”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

Very pleasant afternoon, there are the remains of a Norman Motte & Bailey in the grounds. The house is more modern built in the 18th.century, tea and cakes are available in the house.. It is especially good to visit in Springtime when the Snowdrops are in bloom. As well there is a lake and several gardens, some of whose plants can be purchased. In addition on some Sunday afternoons, excellent tea and cakes are also available at the Parish Hall which is adjacent to the gardens.

“Chilli festival & garden visit”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

A very nice day out. I enjoyed the chilli festival. Many stalls and lots of things to try and buy. The lunch area had many different cuisines from which to choose and what I had was very good and great value. Nice sunny day.

What is very disappointing is the way that the gardens are not a patch on what they used to be when they were regularly open on Wednesdays and Sundays and I used to visit two or three times a year. The beautiful rock garden is no more - presumably a cost cutting measure as it would have been quite difficult to maintain. The herbaceous border is not as well maintained as it was, nor the kitchen garden, and there are no longer plants for sale. Presumably the income did not warrant the amount of work or cost. Such a shame, particularly as there so few decent gardens open to the public in the area. Oh for a Wisley, Hyde Hall, Savill Garden or Beth Chatto Garden around here!! However, what there is is still pleasant and the walk around the lake is very enjoyable.
