This review is for the Salthouse Eaterie breakfast costing £15 per person. Four of us went at 4.30 am for the nightingales singing in Wolves Wood just outside Ipswich - they were magnificent. However, we needed somewhere for breakfast by 7 am, and this Salthouse Harbour hotel restaurant opens at that time. We were first in and had a lovely table overlooking the harbour, and a pleasant young waitress from Slovakia. The breakfast is all waiter-service: i.e. no buffet - so you have to ask for everything, and therein lies one the restaurant's problems. Three of us chose the Suffolk grill, a "full" English breakfast of sausage. mushrooms, bacon, tomato, fried bread and egg (we chose poached egg). I had Eggs Florentine - a muffin with lightly cooked spinach topped by two poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. I chose wisely; it was very tasty, the eggs cooked just runny, and plenty of sauce. The sauce was a little bland and could have done with more piquancy. But my friends were disappointed with their cooked breakfast. The sausage and bacon had obviously been cooked well in advance; and they were hard and overcooked. My wife's poached egg was the consistency of a golf ball. Our waitress ordered another and came with a single egg, which was OK - but by that time the rest of the breakfast was cold. The whole plate should have gone back. The kitchen needs shake-up; it is not acceptable to serve pre-cooked food at a hotel that aspires to be a boutique establishment with four stars. Other points that need attention include the noisy coffee machine right by our table, meaning that at times we could not hear each other speaking; the three mini-pots of jam on the table and two tiny pieces of butter for four people (staff seemed rather grudging when we asked for more and came back with only one extra tiny strawberry jam pot and another two teeny pieces of butter. On the plus side, the staff served us refills of lovely orange juice - tasted real; and the greek yoghurt and berry compote that three of us chose for starters was very good. So it was a mixed experience. Management needs to take a bit of control for the breakfast and sort out the lapses. For the time being we shall give this eaterie a miss.

I visited the restaurant last night as a birthday treat. Really good food, well served and presented. Fabulous dessert. The only irritation was the service charge added to the bill. I would have left a tip anyway as the service warranted it but I resent it being on the bill.

My husband & I were given a gift card for the Salthouse for our 25th wedding anniversary. We decided to do a lunch time booking on a really lovely warm & sunny Sunday afternoon. The service we received was excellent and the food was lovely. Really couldn't fault our meal in any way. Expensive but if you are looking for a treat in wonderful surroundings then this is your place.

myself and a friend took a different friend here for a lunch as a treat as she had recently been very ill.
we were seated in the restaurant and my friend slipped on the still wet floor (she has a medical condition which makes mobility difficult so this was even worse for her) the waitress who seated us laughed it off!
so we sat and ordered drinks and food, all good with the service there.
the waiter looked very young, which obviously is not a problem but he was also very shy and made no attempt at rapport or eye contact with any of us.
we all ordered the sausage sandwich and a side of chips, this was lovely, as were the desserts that we went on to have.

we were sat near the bar and constantly struggled to hear each other due to the noise of the coffee grinder that was being set up and then appeared to be in constant use!

after our meal the dessert plates were taken but the bill did not arrive, after around 15 minutes of being 'left' with no drinks or food left in front of us we made several attempts to get the bill from staff members and ended up resorting to going to ask at the bar. we were then promptly told that they do not deal with it at the bar and instead to sit down and someone would come to us.
i find it quite insulting that on the bill a service charge is automatically added and included in the complete total, not even added on at the end (very clever because a) many people would feel bad about asking to have it removed and b) without doing some maths you do not know the total without the service charge added)

overall the food was lovely but the service let it down.

also, what is with the random talking audio played into the ladies bathroom?!

this is not a cheap restaurant so first class service should be standard. it left us all feeling a little disappointed and i will not rush to return!
