Had a overnight stay in Ipswich and checked out TripAdvisor for a decent restaurant near our hotel, and Mariners ticked all the boxes.
We were not dissapointed with any aspect of this restaurant, in fact our expectations were exceeded. We were spoilt for choice with the menu, but we eventual chose the venison steak & the seafood skewer, both were beautifully presented, and tasted amazing. The staff were lovely, friendly, attentive & helpful. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable visit. Would highly recommend.

As told in some other reviews, this was a formal and 'stuffy' restaurant before, now it is not so much at all. Whether this is a good or a bad thing would depend on your taste.

My wife and I prefer the formal style of before; nearly every dining experience is casual these days, so it was a real treat to visit a more refined restaurant. White table cloths, attentive and polite smartly dressed french waiters who scraped the crumbs from the cloth between courses. Smaller plates, but very rich and filling delicious food.

I agree with other reviewers that state the Mariner's has 'dropped down a tier'. I think this decline has been in progress since at least two years ago though.

So now the table cloths have disappeared. No bread is laid out as standard, strangely it is cooked to order and served along with the starter.

The menu and wine list have been reduced. The staff are much more casual in demeanour and dress. The food is still delicious, but no way as high as the standard of before. The servings were also much larger.

There seemed to be very few staff working and we were left unattended for quite a while. This might be because of the holiday period, but to get through just two of the three courses took close to two hours.

The prices are reduced to reflect this 'tier drop', and it is probably a wise business move on the new owners to drive more business, but it's not our cup of tea really. I understand that we are probably in the minority of people though and I wish them good luck.

I believe the original owners of the Mariner's still run The Great House in Lavenham which has the excellent service and cuisine from before. It's quite a precarious and long drive from Ipswich though.

What a difference new owners make.
What was once a slightly stuffy, formal restaurant is now a very relaxed, comfortable venue with a cool gallic vibe. Food excellent, price very reasonable and staff delightful. Merveilleux!

Putting expense to one side (you have to pay for quality regardless) eating at Mariners 1900 is an experience unparalleled in this part of South-East Suffolk.
Sat on a converted boat deck has a charm of it's own and watching the twinkling lights of the surrounding marina simply adds to the ambiance.
Food here is, quite simply put, delightful. The waiter service polite and respectful and there was no wait for food as we were among the first diners there. I have had tastier food but not for a long time, not so quickly prepared nor at this price. Apparently under new management. All I can say is that the management have got it spot on and the chef deserves a medal. Beautiful food in unique surroundings, well worth saving up for a visit.

After passing this restaurant most days and always wanting to go in, we waited until payday - it’s a tad more expensive than restaurants we usually dine in - and had a Christmas meal to remember. Our starters were divine - we both chose the satay chicken and thought it was the best we’d ever had. Service was very good and waiting staff were very attentive and made us feel at home. Our mains and desserts were also excellent - I had the lamb and my partner had the steak, both meat dishes were succulent and perfectly cooked. We found the mains were also quite light which left room for dessert, which was equally as good. Wine and beer selection was good and we will definitely be returning. Well worth a visit!
