“A great hotel in central Ipswich”
Reviewed November 9, 2012 via mobile

We stayed at the Salthouse hotel on the night of our wedding. We arrived late and left early so only had limited use of the room. However, we arrived to a warm welcome and found our room to be tastefully appointed and very comfortable. The room included breakfast which we really enjoyed the next morning. We had it in our room and particularly enjoyed the marina view.

Just a couple of things:

Arrival was a NIGHTMARE. There was a cycle race taking place the morning of our departure and road closures etc made getting to the hotel very difficult. We live locally so some prior knowledge helped. However we were only informed of the closures a few days before. In other circumstances this would have seriously impacted on our enjoyment.

Rooms were quite small. We personally liked the room but considering price some may not feel like they got good value for money.

Nonetheless - a good stay.

This is a fabulous hotel, amazing setting (right on the harbour) but very expensive.
The room was ultra modern, very comfortable and spacious (loved the modern bath tub). The restaurant food was good, but again expensive. I paid £150 B&B but the man next to me paid £125 and his colleague paid £160. Very odd.
I would return, as it was a great hotel but only if I could it discounted.

Where do I start! hotel was lovely really quirky decor. Staff were very attentive, friendly and proffesional. Our room was amazing, the veiw was lovely and the fact that you could see the habour veiw from the bath was just out of this world. Ate in the restaurant saturday night and the food was excellent, having breakfast served to the table rather the usual buffet that the majority of hotels now offer was a real treat as well. Just can't fault it and will definatly be having a return visit.

Room Tip: Habour view room

Had a meal there sunday night for 5 people, waitress was OK but not friendly, had to wait ages to be asked if we would like a drink. Eventually given menus and were told some meals are not on tonight ( this was 7pm ) leaving very little to choose from. When the main meals arrived 4 of the 5 were fine but the steak meal was stone cold, this must have been sitting around for 20 minutes to be this cold. Sent it back and a fresh one arrived 15 minutes later. After we had eaten and were ordering a pudding we noticed a board on the wall out of sight with specials on, our waitress then said oh yes would you like to know the specials. We did point out that it was too late now.
Food apart from steak was OK not hot and fresh though. If you want fresh food from a better chef go 100 yards to the waterfront, much better.

The rooms were HUGE - much better than I had hoped for. So nice to have a room you can move about in and a seperate dressing area and large bathroom. We had a double room with front view (£140 inc breakfast) which I was very impressed by.

Restaurant area tasteully decorated, nice atmosphere and excellent food and service.

Very friendly receptionist who seemed to genuinely care when I mentioned the noisy radiator in our room, when we checked out. They were already having Maintenance check this out as someone else had complained.

The location is lovely, parking easy, and there are some lovely views over the harbour. If you are there for a while, eat at the hotel for sure, but also try the very reasonably priced Waterfront Bistro up the road.

Room Tip: Choose front room (for harbour view) and higher up as there can be a bit of noise if the boats are h...

This was our 2nd stay at this lovely hotel right on the waterfront by the marina and to be honest I would not have wanted to stay anywhere else in Ipswich

This is a super, very comfortable hotel and I would say one of the best choices for accommodation in Ipswich. The hotel is modern, clean, stylish with friendly, efficient staff. It has lovely views over looking the marina and lots of local bars and good restaurants in the local area within easy walking distance. The rooms are very comfortable, pleasant, clean and modern. We booked a Salthouse room but were upgraded to a Sail Loft room which had a large comfortable bed with lovely quality furnishings and linens, pillows and duvet. The bathroom had a lovely deep bath and modern shower, soft fluffy towels and air conditioning. The view over the town was not much to write home about but the room was quiet and away from the waterfront bars and noise.

I was slightly irritated not to be able to book the special 'Starry nights' package at £130 b&b inc bottle of bubbly. The promo started only a few days before and I was told 'it was not available' but I was able to book the same category of room for normal £150 b&b rate. However, we were upgraded to a slightly better room on arrival. Also my husband forgot his toothbrush and I was slightly dismayed to see a £2.50 charge for this on our bill, since it was one of those awful disposable ones and I did feel this was rather 'penny pinching' having spent £150 on the room for the night (if it had been a decent toothbrush I wouldn't have minded!).

Breakfast was delicious and served to you at your table. There was a good selection with hand cut toast, fine quality ingredients, real orange juice and plenty of tea and coffee.

On a final note - would I stay there again - YES definitely 100% love it. But if you are staying at the weekend especially - be aware that you may experience some noise from the bars and restaurants nearby.

All in all, this is a very good choice when in Ipswich - a super hotel and I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room at the back of the hotel!
