“Wasn't impressed!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013 via mobile

Went to have some drinks last saturday night and was very dissapointed. On arrival the pub was fairly empty but it soon filled up. I went to buy drinks and was absolutely appalled by the prices! 2 small singles came to nearly £10 which is just ridiculous, its supposed to be a pub! Realising we couldnt afford these prices on a night out, we left along with several others. Before we left i used the toilets and they were disgusting, glad it wasnt too busy! Wouldnt go again.

Thank Rosalie S

Dear Rosalie

I am saddened & disappointed with your comments, as we try very hard to give the customer a positive experience. Generally we manage to achieve this and most would say we've managed to turn this pub around back to its heyday. I cannot see what would cost £5 a single? as the optics range from £1.90 (Smirnoff vodka) to £2.90 (Courvoisier brandy) and with splashes at .60p - Which would be £7 max with a mixer. We also do house doubles in Vodka, Gin, Rum, Whiskey for £3 which is very reasonable.

As to the toilets; The staff check the toilets every hour on busy periods. The Saturday you describe possibly, 'The Downsetters' were on that night and we will have been very busy from 8pm onwards. We rely on customers to keep us informed if the toilets are not up to our usual standards. Did you tell anyone the loos were not up to your standard? as that will have elicited an immediate response. It is very rare for the ladies to need serious attention, usually needing paper changes only. But the gents needs a little more care usually due to 'poor aiming' :-/ so we mop out during service. We have had many comments that the loos are now clean and fresh since we opened. So not sure what you found disgusting exactly?

If you wish to pop in for a drink and a chat with the owner or either of my managers, we would be happy to listen to any comments you care to make. We welcome criticism at any time, especially if given at the time where we can fix any issues directly.

Kind Regards Des & the team.

“Great Pub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2012

We went to see East Town PIrates at this pub on a Friday night and what a great night. The band were brilliant and had the place really rocking hopefully the management will book this band again they are great. The pub itself has improved beyond recognition. It has been refurbished and it is light, and airy and tasefully decorated. The choice of beers including lots of real ales is good and the landlord looks after the beer so you get a really good pint no matter what u choose. The bar staff are friendly and attentive and even though we were in the bar at the back and right at the end of the bar they would see you waiting and serve you as soon as they could. My only slight criticism is that the layout of the pub and where the band plays makes it hard to get close to the band without pushing through lots of people. The management and staff should be congratulated on running such a great pub and i would place it up there as a contender with the Dove which usually gets all the plaudits. Again well done and thank you for such a great night.

“Outstanding Little Pub!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2012

I am glad to have the opportunity to write the first review for The Mulberry Tree (and indeed the honour!). Over the years this pub's reputation has come to reflect the neglect with which it has been treated, and many from Ipswich are so familiar with the poor standards historically associated with the venue that they are likely to avoid it altogether!

However, since April 2012 Des, the new Landlord has taken over and the pub has undergone a radical transformation!!! The interior has been competely renovated, it looks and smells nice and feels clean and fresh. Although the building does have a modern and almost minimalist feel to it there are fireplaces and plenty of seating, as well as two television screens. The toilets are well maintained as well the general cleanliness of the pub and there are benches in the front beer garden for all of you smokers!

The barstaff are extremely friendly and helpful, and the Landlord and Manager seem to be front of house a lot and make time for the customers! During the daytime business seems to be slow and there are not always a lot of customers there, however it still feels warm and inviting! However, when the weekend has arrived the pub comes into it's own and has an extremely vibrant atmosphere and has a very adult but fun feel to it. At weekends one can expect to see many of Ipswich's well known and not so well know bands. Dogs and children appear to be welcome provided they both behave! The Landlord even keeps treats for the dogs and children behind the bar if the behave well during the visit!

The Mulberry Tree should soon gain recognition as one of the premier, if not THE premier real ale venues in Ipswich. There seems to be between 14-16 real ales available at all times and their facebook page is regularly maintained and updated whenever new ales are available. They also have traditional cider along with a variety of premium lagers on draught, including Aspall's and Guiness. They also stock the standard range of bottled drinks and spirits, however they have some excellent whiskeys/whiskys on offer such as Bushmills, Singleton, Laphraoig, Talisker and Jura to name but a few. The drinks seem to be reasonably and competitivey priced compared to other pubs in Ipswich also! possibly only downfall is they do not currently do food, but the Landlord has assured me that he plans to ge the pub set up to cater for dining it the near future.

CONCLUSION; to sum it up, this is a great pub! The Staff and Landlord are extremely welcoming, friendly and accomodating,it is grown up, safe, family friendly and enjoyable (even if quiet during the day time) atmosphere. Des' attention to detail and care for the pub is a reflection of his dedication and an absolute credit to him. This pub is well worth a visit, especially at the weekend! This is why I have made this my new "local" and would encourage anyone else to come in for a visit!
