Owner description: Wolsey's Gate is the only remnant of the college founded in the early 16th cent. by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey , who was born in Ipswich.

This might not be the most stunning of monuments that you will ever see but if Henry VIII had not closed this college it could have grown to become one of the oldest universities in England. Real historical interest there...

Although only open to the public for visits on very limited occasions this wonderful building, which is in an excellent state of repair, can be viewed on passing by in the street. An even better view is obtained from the Ipswich and Suffolk Club's carpark. I never get tired of seeing the building, which I do on a very regular basis.

Although not the most visually overwhelming of sites, its historical value alone rates better than a "terrible." It is an attractive site and worth visiting by Wolseyites and others interested in Ipswich history.

Wooden Tudor gate in brick wall. Historical significance but little else.
