If the main thing you look for is a comfortable bed and good food, which spending money on a weekend away - don't go the Marine Bay Shearings Hotel. We took my mum and dad away for a relaxing weekend, following my mum's stroke last year. They recommended it as they had stayed in the past, and said as it catered for an older clientelle it would be perfect. The only access to the hotel was up several high steps, there was no wheelchair ramp and the outside wheelchair lift was broken, appeared to have been so for some time and was not repaired during our stay. We had to physically lift my mum in and out of the hotel. There is only one disabled toilet in the hotel, which is several hundred yards from Reception, tucked away in an area where building work is taking place!
The bed was very poor quality, you could see and feel every spring. The food was absolutely dreadful - small portions (thankfully), bland, overcooked, tasteless and very poor quality.
I feel that Shearings has no respect for their client base which are mainly the elderly - by giving them poor food, lumpy beds, one disabled toilet, no disabled access. Perhaps they are trying to change the demographic they attract? If this is the case - good luck!
The positives were it was warm, clean, lots of hot water, friendly and helpful staff.
I have been on many weekends away and would never go on a Shearings holiday again and will not be recommending them to family, colleagues or friends.

Hi Weekendvisitor_12 I am sorry for the issues you have raised that impacted on your holiday, We have two entrances to the hotel one has 4 normal sized steps where as the other does have lots of steps some of which are sizable. We have a special Help Desk that if we are aware of any mobility issues, you would have been directed too at the time of booking. Their roll is to advise on the suitability and facilities at each of our hotels prior to you travelling, this normally resolves any issues before you get to your destination hotel. Thank you for praising the staff and the comfortable environment we create for all travellers. Thank you for your post. Marcus Williams, General Manager

We do get tired of people winging on about hotels, cruises, tours, especially those people who go onto tell you that they have done dozens of these trips before.Well they should know you only get what you pay for and if don't like it then don't go again.
For over 25yrs we have travelled all over UK and most of Europe with Shearings and know their standard. If you want 5 star hotels etc then go with Insight or Trafalgar but for good value trips at 3star value then go Shearings.
The Marine Hotel was usual standard. The room(all be it on the front) was clean, bright and warm. The food was very good and plenty of it.......ask the waitress if you want more.
The rest of the hotel staff were pleasant and helpful and that was with 3 coaches booked in for the week.
Sometimes passengers can be a pain...just stand by any reception and here the unreasonable requests etc and the tempers when they don't get their own way.
We will continue with Shearings and thier hotels and look forward to meeting the dozens of 'happy' holiday makers (not the moaners) which it has been our pleasure to travel with..

Room Tip: Pay the extra and upgrade

Hi Juneallsop, Really pleased you enjoyed your stay and are looking to return next year. Just so you know, all hotel car parking spaces will be reservable by then, so take note for when you next book. Thank you for scoring us so highly on cleanliness, service and value etc. Marcus Williams, General Manager

From these reviews it appears one either loves Marine Hotel or hates it. We hated it. Credit where it's due, the situation is good, staff on the whole pleasant and friendly, good housekeeping standards, plenty of hot water, usual tea/coffee tray (no biscuits - only at extra cost) and the food well cooked with adequate choice. However it was unforgivable for reception staff to smirk behind guest's backs after receiving complaints - of which there were many. A small point but the dinner menu on 26th was dated 19th on the tables and 12th on the copy dislayed on the notice board - a good job the same menus come round regularly weekly. The problem is with the building. There is a complete lack of maintenance and a serious amount of money needs spending. The view of many guests was that the hotel should be closed whilst refurbishment is carried out. Some even cut there stay short and returned home. We arrived on the first cold day of autumn and were asked to stay in the lounge until the rooms were ready. There was no heat on (this took two days to be rectified) - the two open fires had no fuel in them - and, because the catch had been removed from the outside door which would not stay closed, a howling gale pervaded the building. We all sat there waiting with our coats on. The first room we were given a key for seemed lovely on the surface - 4 poster bed, bay window overlooking the sea, large TV, ensuite bath etc - then we saw the towels on the table and chairs collecting the water pouring through the ceiling and the condensation running down the windows. Still don't know why we were allowed to see this room. After complaining we were given the key to a much smaller room, smaller bed, ensuite shower only, single window, badly stained carpet and worn bedding, with an old-fashioned non-freeview TV which had just 5 channels piped to it. The sash window had no cords to hold it in position, just a bolt to hold it open 6 inches - very wary of our fingers getting trapped. We dressed for dinner as requested but forgot about the heating - we shivered whilst many others sat in fleeces and jackets. Next morning we walked downstairs to breakfast (could not use the lift as it had broken down with a guest stuck in it - took 3 hours for an engineer to come from Liverpool to release her. Apparently the local fire brigade would have charged too much). The view from the dining room to the sea was blocked as the 'smokers' corner' is situated on the verandah outside. [Just a point on the disabled access. It is duly noted on the web site that the wheelchair lift is broken and that access is by 4 steps. Note that these are quite high - however this problem has been advertised for a long time but no alternative has been provided, even a temporary wooden ramp could have been installed as other hotels in the area.] We were glad the four day stay was soon over and we could return to our own bed. Waiting on the door mat back home? - a 10% discount for our next stay at this hotel. I don't think so!

Room Tip: Pay for a sea view upgrade - well worth the extra. Also pay for a reserved space in the car park as the roads around can be very congested.

Hi Critical-Visitor, Thank you for posting your review; it starts well. Good staff, good food, good standards of cleanliness. I am disappointed that you consider the reception staff to be anything but professional when dealing with complaints and with 201 guests in the building that week, we did do our best to satisfy everyone's requests. It is true one couple left early but this was due to the horrible weather and personal circumstance not for any other reasons as you have implied. Regarding the lift, everything is done to ensure the well being of guests at all times and your account is not accurate. You have raised other issues with your stay, some were rectified whilst you were here, some will take longer to rectify. Please be assured that as a company we all work hard to ensuring standards are maintained and improved upon over time. Marcus Williams, General Manager

Bay Marine Hotel Llandudno.

The Marine Hotel (Bay Marine) is one of two Shearings hotels situated on the sea front in Llandudno, the other hotel belonging to the group is the County Hotel, (Bay County) situated about half a mile along the stunning promenade. The Bay Marine is a short walk from Llandudno pier and the town centre with its fine array of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
I have stayed at many Shearings hotels over the years and all have given good value. The Marine is no exception, I stayed at this hotel a few years ago on a Shearings coach package tour but this time I did a self drive half board stay with my daughter, 7th September to the 10th Sept a four day bed breakfast and evening meal deal. We paid a supplement for sea view rooms which were cosy, spacious and comfortable and the food was very acceptable with plenty of choice and good friendly service. The hotel has an indoor swimming pool and there is entertainment in the evening and a sun lounge over looking the promenade to relax in. The hotel was quite full and has two dining rooms which were both busy.
Overall we had a pleasant stay which was further enhanced by having extremely good weather; Llandudno is a beautiful town with many original Victorian features. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Bay Marine Hotel and in my opinion it’s worth the extra money to wake up to a sea view each morning.

To be quite frank I have to say The Marine Hotel is not 4 or 5 star and it doesn’t pretend to be, it is however good value for money at around £50 a night plus extras. My only complaint is that every floorboard in the place seems to creak, rooms and corridors, which can be very annoying during the night. Unfortunately this is a common fault that I have found to be endemic to many of these older hotels.

Room Tip: Room upgrades are always a good idea.
