“Dated amusement arcade”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

This is the best placed and largest amusement arcade in Llandudno - but fails to deliver as a modern attraction. The machines are dated with minimal variety - and although it has toilets available there is little else in terms of facilities. Closes at 10pm and the list start going off just before then, so then you are out on the Llandudno streets with little to do with a teenager son!

“Free toilets if you're spending the day on the beach”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

Many years ago this arcade was called the "Golden Goose" and is probably still better known as "The Goose" than it's current name "Leisure Island". To honest I don't understand why it's called "Leisure Island" because although it's on the pier it's right at the very entrance so it's actually located on dry land which means there's nothing remotely "Island" about it.

Inside it's fairly typical of the modern "amusement" arcade and is mainly occupied by gambling machines. The old Penny Falls and the like are long gone though. I remember once upon a time the most popular machines they had were a bank of old school one armed bandits which cost 2p a spin and had a jackpot of £1 - which was all paid out in 2p pieces if you were lucky enough to win it. They were mechanical machines as opposed to the electronic ones you get these days so no doubt it was decided they were too expensive to maintain, regardless of the fact that they were the machines everyone wanted to play. It also has one of those awful "Jackpot" areas which are designed purely to part fools from their money in the most efficient manner. Although it's cordoned off and only over 18's are allowed in I don't think machines like these have any place in anywhere marketing itself as a "family" arcade.

Elsewhere you'll find the ubiquitous crane grab machines, all of course with the prizes so tightly packed together you've got no chance of winning, and a row of air hockey tables (which are to be fair quite good fun) and they also have a number of video games. These are basically the types of video machine that offer experiences home gaming machines can't match, for example car racing games in which you sit in the machine and use a steering wheel and foot pedals or you pick up a gun to shoot the aliens rather than pressing buttons.

Perhaps the most useful part of the arcade though are the toilets. Conwy Council run a scheme called the Community Toilet Scheme under which they pay businesses a fee in return for which those businesses make their toilets available to the public free of charge. The arcade toilets are listed on the Council's website - http://www.conwy.gov.uk/doc.asp?cat=7840&doc=26345 - so you can use them without feeling guilty if you don't pour any of your cash into one the machines on the way. The ancient byelaws in Llandudno prohibiting any sort of development on the promenade mean there are no public toilet blocks close to the beach so this is your next best bet.
