Description: Welcome to Characters Teahouse and Hot Stone Restaurant. A secret to be found. Tucked away in a side street we are not easy to find. But when you do you are in for a big surprise. We are different to say the least..You could say quirky and you would be right. Old second hand china, cups, saucers, plates, glasses, furniture etc all bought from charity shops and completely mismatched giving the place character and ambiance hence the name Characters. Food is wholesome and unpretentious ,soups, sandwiches, hand made cakes & scones of different flavours forming the basis of our now famous Afternoon Tea. Accompanied by proper loose leaf tea & coffee of your choice we are open daytime 11am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. In the evening Friday & Saturday serving from 6.30pm to 8.00pm our also famous "Steak on the Stone" Accompanied by "Bring your Own" wine, beer or champagne. Whenever you decide to visit you will be greeted with a big welcome from the staff & management of this lovely family run restaurant..hopefully see you soon. Characters Team

“Great Afternoon Tea”
Reviewed October 25, 2013

We were late having lunch one day so decided to have afternoon tea instead and went here on the recommendation of our Hotel. We had the VIP afternoon tea and it was fab. Only slight criticism, was that they did not have the choice of plain or cheese scones - only fruit or flavoured ones. We are definitely going back for the Hot Stone meal when we go in the summer, this comes highly recommended and sounds like something we have done before in France.

“The best afternoon tea”
Reviewed October 24, 2013

I love this place! They do an amazing afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones and cake on a three tier platter! And a huge pot of tea! Very tasty homemade cakes and scones. Friendly staff. Clean and tidy. Going to go back for an evening meal very soon!

Popped in on a recommendation and had the afternoon tea for two. Excellent value and really tasty. Would certainly go again. Friendly staff into the bargain.

“The Best Fillet Steak...bar none!”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

Visited Characters with my husband and friends on Friday night. Two pates, one Thai soup and one salmon and cream cheese as starters. Three fillet steaks on a stone, one salmon fillet on a stone as mains. Two cheese boards and a cheeky bowl of custard (too full for pud but fancied a little something sweet at which the staff were only to happy to oblige!).

Characters steak on a stone has ruined my chances of eating steak anywhere else! Melt in the mouth tender, perfectly seasoned - cooked to my liking as it sizzles away on the stone in front of me, making me in charge of how rare/well done I want my steak. We had baked potatoes and seasonal vegetables on the side... These accompaniments never get touched until the last morsel of steak has been eaten.

The salmon on the stone looked equally inviting - our friend stated that the salmon remained moist and tender - I had wondered whether salmon would dry out quickly as it cooked. It looked and smelled almost as good as my steak!

We enjoyed a few bottles of BYO wine - bringing our own alcohol wasn't an issue or problem. Had we forgotten, there is a small Sainsbury about 5 minutes walking distance on the high street which stays open until 11pm.

The tables were all busy on Friday evening but the staff were wonderfully engaging with us and their other customers. We managed to have a chat to the owners, as we have visited before and it's such a positive experience that despite us being holidaymakers, they remember us and details of conversations that we have had previously.

I can't wait to make another visit - I just wish that they would open a restaurant closer to where I live ;-)
