Description: Welcome to Characters Teahouse and Hot Stone Restaurant. A secret to be found. Tucked away in a side street we are not easy to find. But when you do you are in for a big surprise. We are different to say the least..You could say quirky and you would be right. Old second hand china, cups, saucers, plates, glasses, furniture etc all bought from charity shops and completely mismatched giving the place character and ambiance hence the name Characters. Food is wholesome and unpretentious ,soups, sandwiches, hand made cakes & scones of different flavours forming the basis of our now famous Afternoon Tea. Accompanied by proper loose leaf tea & coffee of your choice we are open daytime 11am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. In the evening Friday & Saturday serving from 6.30pm to 8.00pm our also famous "Steak on the Stone" Accompanied by "Bring your Own" wine, beer or champagne. Whenever you decide to visit you will be greeted with a big welcome from the staff & management of this lovely family run restaurant..hopefully see you soon. Characters Team

Called on last Friday night, after reading reviews on Trip advisor, what an amazing place; service - we were greeted outside and offered a choice of steaks or fish and advised that we could get some wine from Sainsburys 2 mins away (it is BYO); inside was a wonderful, large tables and very individual décor an ornaments; service again first class with happy staff; the fillet steak on stone was probably the best steak I have had and a wonderful experience cooking yourself.

Thank you for this first class experience.

My wife and I were staying in a grim hotel near by and spotted this place on Trip Advisor so decided that we would head for a relaxing coffee and cake with our Saturday papers. We enjoyed a warm welcome and were served in a timely and friendly way.

Everything in the place was very individual but verging on a little too cluttered. We moved a few items off our table and tucked in to great coffee and a cake and scones. Coffee was outstanding, scones were excellent according to my wife and the coffee and walnut cake was good.

We chilled for about an hour and a half and enjoyed the great and varied selection of music playing in the background as well as another coffee.

Would definitely recommend above a corporate coffee chain any day and hope to call again on our next visit.

My mum and sister surprised me with afternnon tea here for my birthday. Very charming venue, lovely atmosphere, great service and the food was lovely too. Lovely selection of sandwiches, light snacks, soups and yummy selection of scones with jam and cream! Will definately be visiting again, would recommend highly.

We have visited this cafe three times since moving to the area, each time hoping it would live up to its 5 star rating, but unfortunately we have alwways had to wait for ages for someone to take our order and then even longer before the food finally arrived. The excuse is always "we are very busy today", even when the cafe isn't full. In that case, it is obvious that more staff are needed. The first time we visited, we ordered baked potatoes with cheese and a coffee. After 20 minutes the potatoes hadn't arrived, so we asked where they were. We were told that the person preparing them hadn't been happy with the first ones and was now preparing two more! After another 15 minutes they arrived, but we had to rush them down as our car was running out of parking time. We decided to give the cafe another chance, but when we visited at 3pm today, no-one came to take our order for ages, and it was the usual excuse that they were very busy. We ordered a coffee and cake and the coffee arrived shortly after ordering, but the cake never materialised. The waitress seemed determined not to catch anyone's eye as she slowly cleared the tables. We drank our coffee as it was going cold, but still no cake, so we cancelled it and left. I mean, how long does it take to slice a cake and put it on a plate?
Sorry, we wanted to like this cafe, and the food, if it ever arrives, is very good, but we just don't have the time to waste sitting around all day and have to say the service is awful. After three tries, we won't be back.

i went to Characters today with two friends and we really enjoyed our lunchtime experience. We waited downstairs until a table was available upstairs. Initially, we chose soup and sandwich but when we came upstairs we were overwhelmed by the look of the afternoon teas!! We loved the mish mash of china cups, saucers and teapots! The staff were so pleasant and friendly, taking time to explain all the options. There are so many types of scones -ginger, banana, Turkish delight, sultana......... We were each served our afternoon teas on beautiful tiered china plates!!! There was so much food and none of us managed to eat it all. The food was fresh, tasty and the sandwiches were oozing yummy fillings! The tea was loose tea served witha strainer and there was lots of it. The price was ridiculously cheap and such good value - only £6.95 a head!!! Well done to the hard working staff/owners. We will definitely be back and spreading the word.
