2 night stay.Reception lovely, nicely decorated, dining room same.Booking in almost robotic, not welcoming.Given envelope with key card & instructions to take lift to 4th floor, cross landing to another lift (had poster warning of norovirus in some hotels, poster nowhere in rest of hotel made me wonder if they'd had it there?that & sanitising gel available on entering dining room)
5th floor where every floorboard creaked ,room small, odd shaped with magnolia painted anaglypta wallpaper, mismatched furniture & tv on an old pub table.Beds comfy & clean.Bathroom shabby & cold, radiator either doesn't work or heating not on for whole of stay.
Shower powerful & hot.
Coffee & tea in room(2 x tea bags, same of cheap coffee)
Breakfast self service, food ok but same disgusting tea & coffee :o(
Hotel has food hygene level of 3,have never known anything anywhere below 4.Not surprised, ordered sandwiches, watched as man prepared them,(no gloves)grabbed handful of salad from tub (no tongs) used cash register, carried tray of glasses to bar, returned to serve food not washing hands...needless to say i left most of my food.
Shame as hotel in a prime location, needs complete refurbishment.
Won't be returning!!

We have just returned from the Grand - Our third visit. I just love the entrance to the hotel - It has a lovely
ambiance.
We did not upgrade this time and wish we had done. The room we had was not ideal - we booked a twin room but were given a room with a double bed and a single. This made the room
over crowded - hardly room to move. The shower was awful - not nice to use as there was grime on the shower curtain and the bottom of the shower. Staff are nice and entertainment excellent.
Food couldn't be better - have as much or as little as you wish.
Booking again for later in the year but will definitely ask for an upgrade. This would be for a room that isn't over the bar lounge as the noise prevents you going to sleep until 12ish.

Room Tip: Book a room that isn't over the bar lounge and book an upgrade to one of the Premier rooms.

Having stayed at The Grand on three previous occasions I can happily say that it improves each time. I understand that you can't please all of the people all of the time but you certainly try.
The warm welcome from the reception staff coupled with their efforts to keep their guests happy is to be commended.
The food is uncluttered and hearty with enough choice to keep hunger at bay.
Our room was clean, furnished adequately, we even had a jacuzzi.
The view was amazing.
There was entertainment both evenings if that was your choice or alternatively you could enjoy a quiet drink in the lounge area. Looking around there were many happy faces and the atmosphere was positive.
It is a large hotel and keeping up with maintenance must be a challenge but if you point out a problem the staff are happy to find a resolve.
We will return to the charm that the Grand has to offer, the staff in all areas work hard to make it work efficiently. Well done!

I looking at the reviews of other people that stay at the grand does the owner ever read them and note what people are saying good entertaiment we went to weatherspoons for a lovely breakfast the hotel is in the best position could be made lovely staff work very hard .

My wife and i went there for a nice peaceful weekend break only to find our room was dirty, cobwebs and dust all over the place, very shabby and a shower that did not work properly and dripped all night, granted this was repaired the next day after complaining and a maid come back to get rid of the cobwebs, we didn't have much of a view but that was on the plus side as you couldn't see out of the dirty windows anyway, as for the peaceful part, anyone that walked past our door or in the room above us sounded like the roof was coming down and kept us awake mos of the night, food was luke warm and not much choice and it was an imposition to the staff that we actually wanted to eat there, to the extent that they were clearing the food away as we were trying to put it on our plates. We did send an email of complaint but have not even received so much as an apology. Would I recommend this place I think not.

Our bedroom was dirty. Old dirty fingermarks, dusty. Cracked bath panel, a radiator with paint peeling off, rusty balcony, a wardrobe door that wouldn't close properly. A definite lack of maintenance on the whole. The tea making facilities were poor standards - cheap tea bags yuk. Breakfast was poor quality again - no beans, awful scrambled eggs, terrible tea. A complete lack of quality and attention to detail. Even some of the crockery and cutlery was dirty. Its such a shame, such a beautiful old hotel which is in desperate need of some TLC.
