On arrival the impression was that we were in for something out of the ordinary. This was no conventionally shaped cylindrical lighthouse but a substantial edifice. The entrance hall was atmospheric and full of interesting artefacts.
It did not live up to its initial promise as the Telegraph Room was sub-standard. We arrived on a chilly April evening and it was immediately obvious that there was a damp problem as there was a dehumidifier running. Despite this, the windows steamed up as fast as we could clear them so the sea view windows on three sides of the room were obscured.
The room was furnished as a period piece which might appeal to some but not to modernists. It was dated and dusty and the fabrics were faded.
At night the room was dark and dingy with barely adequate lighting. The plum coloured ceilings and dark woodwork did not help.
The breakfast was good and Fiona was friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed our stay despite the shortcomings but the quality doesn't match the price.
