Iris Hotel

Reviewed January 7, 2013

We have just spent two nights including New Years Eve at the Iris Hotel. We stayed in "the annex" which was across a little courtyard at the back of the main building. The room was very small but clean with a comfy bed and recently reburbished bathroom (with power shower). The breakfast was unusual with no pork dishes due to religious beliefs of the owners. The staff were very friendly and helpful but cosmopolitan and some things lost in translation. If you want a cheap and cheerful break for a couple of days you get what you pay for. Not for those who like a little luxury.

Room Tip: Bit of a lottery curtains hanging off in our room and I had to climb over the bed to get in it. Howe...

We stayed here for one night, room was lovely, nice sea views. On the downside we were put on the top floor, no one mentioned the lifts were out of order, so we had eight flights of stairs to climb, would have been nice to ask if we would have a problem with climbing them. Then 2 oclock in the morning the fire alarm decides to go off, possibly someone having a crafty fag out the window, but no staff were about to find out what the problem was. The coffee in the rooms could do with upgrading it was so bitter. Breakfast was very nice, apart from feeling a little rushed as staff waiting for empty tables. Staff could also do with smiling a little more.

I stayed here for one night with my wife on a Friday - mid December. my wife had booked it on the spur of the moment from an E-mail offer. At £35 for the two of us for the night, with breakfast it was good value. The room was clean and warm, if a little small, but more than adequate. This was made up for by the bathroom, which was spacious and had a large and powerful shower. The hotel is located on the promenade within walking distance of all areas of the town.
Breakfast was a curious affair, with beef replacing bacon and beef sausages, rather than pork. Eggs, scrambled and fried, along with beans, tomatoes, hash browns and mushrooms were available, if not as warm as they could have been. Cereals, toast, tea, coffeee fruit-juice were available so a good breakfast could be had without meat!
I understand that the breakfast choices are limited due to the owners religious beliefs, but they may be better served by reducing what they offer (not many people took them up on the beef items)
Overall an OK hotel but only at the right price, it would not be so good at the prices displayed at reception. The exterior would benefit from a face lift also.
We may return but only if we got it at the offer prices which we found this time.

Room Tip: rooms at the front have great sea-views

this is third and last time we visit this hotel.it may of changed hands since but standard have dropped over the last twelve months. We booked a superior twin bed room with a sea view, at a special price. The room was lacking t.l.c. housekeeping must have given this room a wide berth.
tablets on the floor along with their foils had been left by the previous client. The curtains were hanging of the window and had been for some time as the fastenings were missing, toilet was missing parts. This was not the worst part BREAKFAST was a total joke, cols beans cold weak coffee scrambled eggs were served from a vintage saucepan and were rock solid but the very worst was there beef slice served a substitute for bacon, it was inedible. thank you iris we will not be back.

Room Tip: change the hotel

Stayed
Here With My Wife,Got a cheapy, £70 For 2 Nights,So Wasnt Exppecting anything Marvelous 4 MY Money,And I Was right,Firstly,No Beer IN The pump,They Tried To Sell Me A Bottle!!! the bar is just an extension of the dining area downstairs, the staff at breakfast are "spruced up in white shirts and dickie bows.",You do have a choice of cereals juice, coffee, tea etc.... the breakfast itself was not very warm, but i ate it sausage was a bit hard,as a previous review had said, but the second day, they were better, the rooms Are Small,But Ample,The Bed Was Clean,And Comfy,The Radiators Came on at night,so,it was warm.

Room Tip: make sure your in the hotel, and not the annex, simple as that!!!

The hotel was cheap and in a good location, but nothing seems geared towards the customer, but instead for the hotel's convenience, e.g. the bar is only open 6-9 pm, meals 6-8pm but you have to order by 5pm - thought we were back in the 70s ! So we ate elsewhere !

We had a room in the basement - B1, the room was cold and had two lights out - we reported this to reception and were told that the heating was only turned on at 6pm (it was -2 outside), and the lights would be fixed (they weren't). The room never really got warm, and the bathroom had no heating and was very cold. But the room was clean and had quirky touches (coloured flashing lights - although they could get annoying !).

Breakfast - the beef bacon is still being served - and I was curious to try it....well it was ok, but strange for breakfast. the beef sausages werenice but again would be better for a lunch or evening meal as they were peppery.

All in all as we were only staying one night, and it was handy for Venue Cymru, it was fine - but not sure if we'll bother going back !
