Montclare & Cumberland
Ranked #85 of 145 Llandudno B&B and Inns

This is two hotels next to each other with a doorway joining the two together, we were in the Cumberland section, on the 2nd floor in a very small room at the back, the rooms at the front are bigger, it was clean, but the water pipes knocked all night, we stayed on a saturday night and there were some guests that very drunk running between our floor and the one above, and you can hear everything that goes on upstairs, from them using the bathroom to a squeeky bed. There is oly parking for 3 cars and as we arrived late in the afternoon it took us a while to find somewhere to leave our car. It isnt what I would class as a four star hotel. I was looking forward to our stay but came away disappointed.

Room Tip: ask for a room at the front.

The title does not refer to the fact that that this is two adjoined hotels but to the vast difference between the rooms at the front of the hotel and what can only be described as cells at the back. The first room my wife and I were given was on the third floor up several flights of ever diminishing stairs, as my wife was injured and couldn't make the climb we were moved to a 'room' on the second floor. This was a very small (twin not the double requested) room with no window just a frosted glass fire exit and a small frosted side opening. The television, although flat screen as advertised was in keeping with the size of the room i.e. small.
The tiny en suite shower room (again with no natural light) was just big enough for one person, a larger person would not have fitted in the shower. Surely if a hotel (although for no apparent reason) was awarded four stars this should apply to all its rooms and facilities. It would be interesting to know how the star system in these types of hotel is awarded. I travel a lot for business and spend much of my time in four star hotels and therefore expect a certain level of accommodation however perhaps I am being naive in expecting a similar level in seaside hotels but if that's the case perhaps this should be made clear by the awarding bodies.

Although obviously outside of the control of the hotel there was no warning that there would be noise from a local club loud enough to ensure we couldn't sleep until after midnight.

The limited parking as described on the website was much more than limited it was a maximum of 5 spaces with no chance of parking anywhere in the streets surrounding the hotel. The advice from the hotel was to use the car parks just 2 blocks from the hotel but which were actually a good 10-15 mins walk.

The much acclaimed breakfast, perhaps because it was weekend and therefore busy, was nothing more than average in quality although there was plenty of it. The bacon was dry and the eggs requested 'over easy' were rock hard.

The hotel was clean but very dated and more than a little chintzy. The staff were friendly and helpful but perhaps will be less so after this critical yet truthful review.

It is very interesting that all the positive reviews appear to be from people who were at the front of the hotel and in the double rooms...as I said a tale of 2 hotels...

Room Tip: Get a room at the front and consider what you expect from a 4 star hotel...

What a delightful hotel this is!

We stayed on Sunday and Monday of the August Bank holiday 2013 and had a wonderful weekend. Tess & Ian could not have been more helpful. Due to a booking problem we had to change rooms. We had a back room on the Sunday with which we were happy and would have stayed there had Tess not insisted we moved to the front on Monday which had a marvellous sea view and a huge four poster bed! Both rooms were immaculately clean and very comfortable.

Breakfast was quite incredible! Cereal, toast and an extremely large full breakfast. We didn't have any need for lunch as we were full all day!

Montclare & Cumberland is a four star establishment that easily lives up to its rating. Room costs are good and there is a licensed bar with a good range of drinks available at reasonable prices.

We have stayed in many hotels/guest houses in Llandudno and will struggle to find a cosier, friendly place.

We will return!

Well done Tess, Ian & staff

Our stay far exceeded our expectations and that was largely due to the quality of the room and the service provided. Nothing was too much trouble and it really did feel like the staff cared about their guests. The rooms are clean and well furnished and we had a great nights sleep

The breakfast is probably one of the best I have ever had in a Hotel and we will definately be going back
