“Cumberland was excellent because...”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

it was a venue for my daughters wedding, I could not fault anything about the whole weekend, busy as they were with many other guests along with a craft show going on (on the Sunday), every member of staff, (and that really was every one of them), put themselves out to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible. The rooms had comfortable beds, lush pillows and was exactly what we needed, I was allowed to decorate the hall and had help in various area's enabling it to be a much easier job than anticipated. I would recommend the friendliness of the service, the quality of the food, the beautiful outlook and convenient situation it was placed in for sea and shops.
Many thanks to everyone there, will highly recommend to others

We arrived at the hotel on Friday afternoon and managed to get our cases into the foyer there was tea coffee and biscuits in one of the reception rooms for us. Our room was ok it was a twin room and it was clean and comfortable. We did however have problems in the evening as our weekend stay was to include free drinks between 8pm and 11pm when we went to the bar there was no bitter on the list and we were told that we could only have 1/2 pint at a time which we weren't told about before we arrived. The meals were good but they weren't very big meals. One of the Waiters was fantastic (Joseph) All the waiting staff were good and very polite.

Stayed at this hotel at the weekend with a group of people and we had a very good time. The staff were very friendly and the food and service were excellent. Previous reviews I read were unjust. I understand from others in my party that some rooms need updating and the showers need replacing. This is a 3 star hotel not a 5 star which I think some people should take into consideration.

Room Tip: I was in room 417

We were making a flying visit to Eastbourne and having enjyed the sun and walked our 2 small dogs along the very nice promenade we fancied an afternoon tea. Most of the cafes along the prom, although nice, did not provide a decent homemade cake so off we trot to the copious number of large hotels opposite the prom to enquire about afternoon tea. Although it was just 16.45 no one wanted to serve afternoon tea even though it was advertised. The Mansion (Lions) Hotel made my husband feel like a just landed alien and having looked him up and down; noting shorts and a t shirt, told him that afternoon tea had finished in a most condecending tone. We then went next door to the Cumberland Hotel - well! what a difference; a warm welcome to us and our dogs, provided we sat in a designated area (no problem with that) and the most delightful coffee and homemade cake in lovely surroundings overlooking the beach and prom. Well done to the lovely lady who served us (Sharon, I think)
and well done to the hotel; they made us welcome even though they were booking in a coach party. The hotel has obviously been upgraded and there was none of the tired look that you get in so many hotels these days. Such good value too - just £3.95 per head.

We stayed for only one night and felt like a fish out of water, we were made to feel very unwelcome, we were out of there age limit too young for them it was like god's waiting room and the chairs and sofas all arrange around the walls just like an waiting room. From check in to check out we were questioned are you staying here by any member of staff we meet . At check in there was two staff members behind the desk hard to say what level as no name badges were on show at anytime who check us in didn't bother to stand up to welcome us just said sign here and here lift round the corner and off you went. 15minutes later we meet the same lady who check us in questioned us as we walked through the lobby if we were staying in the hotel.

The hotel is well run down needs TLC from outside to inside and the rooms. Same as the other lady previous to us the c was missing from the Cumberland so we stayed at the umberland Hotel
attention to detail was missing all round, in side looks scruffy just need tidy up a little maybe one of the two behind the check in desk could get up of their bums and pay more detail to the look of the lobby areas, dirty glasses, cups all over the place, but not there ''job''.

Same complete as the other reviews floorboards real problem didn't sleep all that well the floor boards all night long don't now who is walking around at 4am outside our room but it was all night long but as why say it is an old hotel for the old. The TV is from the 80's only the 5 stations looks like the one TV my mother had in her kitchen for the past 30 years she has upgraded hers to the flat screen now why cant the Cumberland

I could go on and on with pages and pages but what is the point, the hotel is old needs a good clean tidy up change the rooms just change change . Change the staff be more hotel friendly I can see why the coach groups us this hotel it is geared towards that market, I have stayed at much better B&B in Eastbourne a 100 times better so if you not in a coach party look for a B&B with personal service. I give the hotel a poor rating the management need to get out more and see what is out there visit the B&B in your own town.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the many of the other B&B's in Eastbourne you will get a much better sleep...

Stayed for 1 week July 2013 . Hotel mainly geared towards coach parties but expected that to be to be the case. Rooms being gradually upgraded and certainly need it. We had a sea view and balcony which was the only good thing about the room. The main problem though was the lack of sleep due to the extremely creaky floorboards. When asked if these would be improved when the rooms were being done we were just told " well it is an old building". Have stayed in many old hotels and never had such a bad problem before. On a brighter note the hotel is in an excellent location and all the staff were lovely, but the lack of sleep means we would not stay here again.

We have used this hotel for dance weekends and love it.
Staff are great. Can't help you enough.
We take a large group of people with us and although you can never please everyone I would say that people have a really good time.
Plenty to do in the area too.
Have booked to take our group back in December. Can't wait.
