“Worth a visit”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

The food is fine, of good quality and reasonably priced with plenty of choice. The menu changes monthly and varies according to season. Great variety of fish dishes sourced locally. It is worth visiting for these reasons alone. Having visited several times I find it more appealing and maybe less claustrophobic in the summer when you can enjoy 'al frecso' dining.

However if visiting at the height of summer and sitting in the garden you might find a lack of shade and rather hard seating for those lacking posterior flesh!

The owner/host knows this is a quality place and can at times come over a little arrogant.

“You're in for a fun time”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

You've all seen the Fawlty Towers re-runs on BBC America. Well this is a kinda tribute venue. The owner does the real rude to guests thing whilst the servers all shuffle. Could be scary for kids so your group has to be ready for the fun. Food is ok but there's no Manuel character. Hard to do the ratings as I figure the atmosphere is supposed to be bad - so could be 5 * if that's what you want. I loved it!

“He is nice, really!”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

We eat at the Rose Cottage on a regular basis, and the food is always excellent. For the winter period there is a deal of two rib eye steaks/salmon and a bottle of wine for under £30 - very good value. The steak & ale pie with mash & loads of veg is wonderful. The pub is warm and cosy, with a roaring log fire. We have always had excellent service here. I will admit that the landlord does have a pretty dry sense of humour and could be taken as being a bit abrupt sometimes, but if you eat here regularly you soon realise that he's really very nice. They sell fresh eggs and our first stop is to get the meringues before anyone else buys them - superb!! The BBQ and Morris Dancers on Good Friday are well worth a visit, especially is you have foreign visitors staying - it's a real spectacle.

“Really great country pub food!”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

We enjoyed an evening at this great country pub. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. We rated it best of all the restaurants around Eastbourne and East Sussex. We enjoyed mussels, shrimp, local lamb, Sussex Chicken (special dishes each day). The Owner was congenial and attentive.

“Shame”
Reviewed May 6, 2012

Just got back from a pleasant walk with friends. Our leader had walked the route and chosen this pub as our lunchtime stop. Having heard lots about it I was looking forward to going inside. It was full so we decided to order and sit outside (with our muddy boots that we had removed before entering). The menu was varied, middle range pricing, but more for sit down full meal. I only wanted a sandwich (don't like to walk on full stomach) , none on menu. I was told by the landlord ' the chef says if you can't find anything on the menu that you would like then it's a poor show' (or words to that effect). End of. No 'I'll ask', 'I'm sure that won't be a problem'. I know they had bread because there was Ploughmans on the menu! Ended up with a packet of crisps! Peasant! If you don't like people don't become a landlord. This lane is used by many walkers and cyclists who don't want a three course meal, just something to get them to the next base. Poor chef probably is a nice chap/ess that's not even aware of this poor excuse that's passed on.
