Recently spent a week at this Golf & Leisure resort as a party of 5 adults one child staying in the Casa Sophie villa.

The resort itself is in south western Algarve a 1hr 10min drive, along the A22, from Faro airport. The drive is dead easy but, be aware, the A22 is a toll road, though not expensive. The resort entrance lies on a round about on the N125 and the main resort is a good drive along its private road.

The road leads you past the golf courses and towards the villas. You also pass the restaurant/bar area and a road leading to the driving range and bowls green. The food at the Spike/Opaque restaurant is well priced and very very tasty. I would recommend eating their at least once. Our villa was located at the top of a hill and was all over one floor. There was a large living room which opened onto the dining room and kitchen. Along the main hall were the two, en-suite double rooms and two twin rooms with another bathroom opposite. Outside is a large patio area and two pools. One small pool which feeds into the larger main pool.

None of us were golfers so we can't make a comment on the courses!

This resort was brilliant and, a good distance from the party towns of Faro/Albufeira/Vilamoura and Faro. But, is close to both the Mediterranean and Atlantic Oceans. The beach town of Salema only a 5 minute drive.

Room Tip: We did not pay for pool heating but, given the time of year, we probably should have! We booked through James Villas and heating was an extra £250 or so.

We are in a 3 bed villa with private heated pool on phase 3 of this resort. Granted there are a couple of unfinished villas but there is no active building work and if you look at a satellite image on google maps you can check that you are not overlooking one. Our villa was beautiful Inside and out, very luxurious. The heated pool was maintained at 30 Celsius which was wonderful to swim in at any time of day and our 2 yr old spent hours in it, well worth paying an extra 140 GBP for. The garden had manicured appearance and during our week's stay the pool was cleaned, the grass mown and the flower beds tidied. My only concern has been trying to keep the impeccably furnished interior safe from our 2 yr old and 4 mth old - fortunately our kids are very clean but if your kids like to run amok it could be a stressful time.

We didn't use the shared resources of the resort so can't comment, but not sure that you would ever need to if you have a private pool. I am a golfer and would have liked to have tried the course,it looks pretty nice, but will depend what you are expecting. As for the restaurants, why would you need them with so many lovely local restaurants dotted along the coastline?

There is a small intermarche 5 mins drive away and a bigger 'intermarche super' 20 mins away in Lagos.

The resort is pretty empty this week (late April) but the whole of the Algarve seems pretty empty.

All in all I suspect given the slightly unfinished nature of the resort we probably got a good deal on a very high-end villa and we have loved being in the villa. If you want a base with a heated pool to spend lots of time in and from which to explore this lovely coastline then definitely worth a Look. Contact a few owners directly and negotiate a discount too.

And if you do stay here, check out the Burgau Beach Bar overlooking Burgau beach for lunch or dinner, and Praia do Camillo in Lagos

Room Tip: Check google maps satellite to make sure you have a good view and not next door to an unfinished villa

When in the golf club, pictures adorning the walls show what a history this place has & what a great resort it once was. Whilst the staff are lovely, it is VERY dated & the food is basically pub grub & not very good at that. For what you get, it is expensive. The grounds and villas are beautiful though.

Really looking very tired indeed, much better options closer to Lagos, this place needs a lot of money spending on it to bring it up to scratch.Very disappointed. Golf course was equally disappointing, fairways and greens in poor condition and whole place felt like it needs a facelift

We arrived at the resort (about an hour and 15mins from Faro airport) late at night, and the receptionist was welcoming and informative. I was shocked when he said our villa (James Villas, 97) was another 2 mile drive away, I didn't realise how big the complex was! Our villa was absolutely huge and of a very high standard. The views over the gold course are beautiful - although I didn't play golf, I heard from others that the course was shabby in places, and could do with updating.

The central pool is enormous and there's a kids pool on a lower level with a playground too which is great for little ones. As the weather was so nice we didn't see the indoor pool. We ate at the gold restaurant 'Spikes' a few times for lunch overlooking the 18th hole, and the food was of a very high standard. The problem is, this is really the only good place to eat on the whole resort. They could do with another 2 or three restaurants. There's an Italian by the entrance (2 miles away!) but we'd heard such bad things about it that we didn't bother, and went off site, (e.g to Salema, or O'Tiago just round the corner).

There's a good supermarket about 5 minutes back down the high road, and dozens of beaches within a short drive too. You can get to Lagos (the zoo's worth a morning's visit, and the marina's beautiful) in 20 minutes.

I would definitely stay here again, it would just be nice to have a few more facilities on-site.

Room Tip: Visit James Villas last minute deals!
