“Thanks for a great 30th anniversary!”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

We have been staying at La Samanna for about 17 years, twice a year for the last 7 or 8, and have to tell you there's a reason other than just the beautiful location, great service, and cold Carib that Jean Woel, Garry, or Romel always have waiting for us before we even sit down at the beach bar - it is the same staff, now friends, that for years greet you so well and take care of you even when you act like the rude American tourist that we all sometimes become. The island has changed over the years, some good, some bad, most lately because of the economy, but for every closed shop in Marigot, or delayed project (Blue Mall) there is something else great going on. If you need a totally "clean" place and not a "dirty" island as one writer comments, then perhaps you should avoid experiencing what we have come to love as a place where there is real life, and not just another sheltered resort on a perfect island.

Enough preaching, now for the facts. The beach is the best on the island, if you like quiet, a wonderful and easy swim, one row of loungers with nothing to block your view, and no more than 50 or so people on the beach at one time. The sand can pile up in the late summer, making it a little hard to climb back up to your lounger, but if that's a problem, just go to the pool. Get a beachfront room, and you are only 50 feet away from the water. Breakfast is included in most room rates, and is excellent. Lunch at the beach bar is too. Have not eaten at the main dining room in a couple years, but did have a appetizers in the wine cellar for 25th anniversary and it was great. Be sure to rent a car, so you can go to Marigot, Grand Case, or Cupecoy for dinner (Pressoir, Mario's Bistro, La Cigale, Temptation, Rare . . . ) and to the casinos for blackjack after "if you don't like nice things". Check with Benny and Roberta, great concierges, to get you set up.

La Samanna, thank you for welcoming us back for our 30th anniversary this week. It was, as always, a great time. Our room literally looked out on the wedding that is described in a prior posting, and we actually watched it from our deck with rum drinks in hand. You did a great job handling what must have been a difficult task at this time of year in the islands. We know you also went out of your way to accomodate the newlyweds and their party until the very early hours of the morning, all to try to make it right for them. That's why we continue to come to La Samanna. We read a wedding party members review and can tell you that they must have been at a different, pretentious wedding on St Barts or Anguilla, because the one on St. Martin would have been most peoples dream! We can only hope that the young surgeon and his new wife (yes, we were next to you on the beach the next morning as you and your friends blasted music, cursed loudly and debated a new Porsche) come to realize how good you have it!

Frank, Mersula, Cassy, Benny, Thicot, Romel, Jean, Richard, Orlando, Jean Woel, Emma, Roberta, Garry,Thelma, .... and everyone else, we thank you and look forward to the 2014 Super Bowl party. Please remind Romel that we would like reservations for front row seats, a bucket of Caribs, and lots of classic French football snacks - foie gras and escargots.

Dear Sammycain,

It was a delight to read your review, thank you very much for taking the time to write it. Also, I wanted to thank you for your comments about the staff, I will be sharing it with them as I am sure they will be very happy to hear them. It is true, a lot of our guests have become like family to the staff - you cannot train people for that, it comes naturally. I am glad that after all these years, and the changes to the island, the hotel, the food, the staff and the island still make you want to return.
Rest assure, we will have the bucket of Caribs ready along with some wonderful snacks for you when you return in 2014. We look forward to seeing you then.

Had a little problem with checking in but they were very apologetic and upgraded the room. Other than that. Great place. Great beach. Overall experience was very good. The rooms were clean and everyone was very helpful when asking them questions. I would definitely recommend.

Don't bother staying on St Maartin/Martin unless you like Casino's, etc. It was not a nice island and the only reason to go there is to fly in to go to St Barth or Anguilla. If you need to stay 1 night in St Maartin if you want a clean room then staying at La Samanna might make sense, but at $900 a night it just wasn't worth it. Our room was maybe 500 sq ft and the furniture took up most of the space so it was very cramped and nothing like the Anguilla resort room that were double or triple the space. Also, the people on the island and at the hotel were not very nice compared to the wonderful people on Anguilla and St Barth. Just overall not a good experience in the Caribbean on this over populated, run down, dirty, island and to top it off La Samanna was a bland hotel with bland people working there.

Room Tip: First level would be best. 2nd level had a small patio and getting to the ocean was not nearly the...

Dear Deanna H,
Thank you for taking the time to write about your impressions of the island and the resort, it is regretful that you feel this way about both. St. Maarten/St.Martin has expanded and grown over the years whereas our neighboring islands have done so at a much slower pace. Nevertheless, to say that it is run down and dirty seems a little harsh giving that U.S. News & World Report just named it #8 of Best Islands in the World. As for your room, we have 7 different categories of room, ranging from deluxe ocean view to 2 bedroom suites, I am sorry that the room you reserved was not what you expected. Should you change your mind about returning to St,. Martin, we hope you give us another chance to show you what makes this island and resort so magical for so many.

Restaurant food was burnt. We ordered a bottle of wine and it arrived when we were almost done with dinner. When I asked about any issue, the answer was that it was 'off season'. That seemed to 'excuse' any concern. Some staff were authentically helpful; however most were smiling while body language showed disdain. It seemed they felt they were upscale - they were more pretentious then upscale.

Dear Isabel1918,

Thank you for posting your review on TripAdvisor. I regret that you did not have a wonderful experience at our resort and I apologize if you felt the staff was being pretentious. Believe me, that is not the impression our staff wants to give to guests. Rest assured, your comments do not go unnoticed and I have shared your comments with the staff. I hope you consider coming back to La Samanna where your experience will be extraordinary.

My fiancé and I stayed at La Sammana two years ago for a wedding. We were excited to be returning! What a disappointment. The waitstaff clearly do not like American Tourists. We had a wedding group of about 70 people who flew in from all over the States, I'm sure will be adding to the service disappointment. $7 waters, $9 CoCa Cola, $18 well drinks, $36 breakfast. You can get better breakfast at IHOP. Being on the French side of the Island, you would think the food would be the best you ever tasted. Especially, the Wedding Cake!!!! Disaster!!!! We thought of doing the same type of Destination wedding here, only to be told loud and clear, La Sammana does not need American Tourist money. The highlight of the resort are 3 of the nicest employees I have ever met, Maylis-Hotel Guest Relations Manager, Romel and Jean and the Beach Bar. Excellent!!!!! These 3 alone, changed our mind from checking out and going to the Westin. I felt so bad for the Bride and Groom, to have their family and guests travel so far only to be so disappointed. We will Never Return to La Sammana or the Island of St. Maartan. You have been informed.

For the last 9 years we have enjoyed vacationing on Anguilla and have stayed at Mallihouanna (which is closed but was our favorite) The Viceroy and Cap Jaluca. This year we decided to stay on St Martin and chose La Samanna. What a beautiful resort... situated high on a bluff with a gorgeous view of the entire beach. We had a 2 bedroom suite #L 10 which was close the main building and right on the beach. This was probably the most relaxing stay I can remember. The staff was attentive and yet discreet ... most notable were Mark (the beach manager) and Isabella at the front desk. If you are desiring a beautiful beach resort in an elegant and private setting this is the place....sadly we will miss Anguilla however we have found our new destination for years to come.

Beautiful, well kept resort! The beach and pools were amazing. We stayed in one of the beach cottages and it was well worth the cost. It was spacious and decorated beautifully. The restaurant was excellent as was the view. The bar staff was the only thing mediocre, they were unfriendly and slow. The pool was rarely cleaned up from the day before until after 11am. I found the French side of the island much more relaxing and cleaner than the Dutch side. The restaurants were very good on the French side. Travelers need to be aware the taxis are very expensive.

Room Tip: The cottages were perfect for6 people.
