“Totally craptastic!”

We stayed here about five years ago, and I'm not sure whether my standards have gone up, or the quality of this place has dropped with the name change. Checkin was a mess and they got our reservation wrong, and attempted to put our family in a studio instead of a one bedroom, fortunately, I had the confirmation printed out. The one bedrooms rooms are huge, and all face the beach, so that's pretty fantastic.

The big disappointment was the breakfast which seemed more like feeding time at the zoo. The half-interested staff mill around replenishing huge platters of low quality foods, and then seem quite disapproving if you don't finish everything on your plate. Indeed there is a large threatening sign indicating you will be charged RM10 for every 100 grams of "food wastage"... What??? Maybe provide food that people want to finish if you are going to do that. Last time we stayed there breakfast was run by Delifrance, who have since departed the establishment... and I remember it was much better.

Getting out of the hotel, there is an awesome Indian restaurant directly over the road serving some of the best Indian food I've ever eaten. There is also a hawker centre five minutes walk up the road serving up local delicacies with a very welcoming atmosphere.

Overall, I'd probably not go back to Paradise Beach, but we had a nice time here despite its many shortcomings.

Stayed there for 2 nights. Stayed at 2 rooms apartment, seaview, very spacious. Feels like home and the view was awesome! Breakfast was varieties and acceptable. The highlight for the stay was the pool and the beach which full of activities. But the fees are quite expensive. Parasailing, banana boats, jetski..overall, it's fun to go especially with your families!

We checked in around half hour later than my relative. We though we taking the different type of room, so we willing to paid for a bit extra price. But, after checked with my relative, the room we both taken was the same. Sincerely, the amount was not much, but when we asked for a reason, the staff replied "It's like that." (means there was no reason for price increase.) After meet with the manager, then only they gave us the price. Our room facing to the sea, and the room was really big and clean. The room design was Malaysia traditional style and most furniture in wooden. The air-cond was not cold enough (maybe the weather too hot).
Everything in the room was ok, except the air-cond.
Overall, It's suitable for Family stay.

Was a bit wary after reading the reviews before booking but decided to go forward and take a chance because was here 3 years and 13 years go and both time was excellent. This time we went for the 3D 2N school hols promo for a Paradise Suite with separate room and hall. Yes, the hotel is aging but linen crisp and clean but not so for bedspread and sofa, oh well. The toilet was clean, plumbing excellent tho i did read about a review or two saying how dirty and bad plumbing was, maybe we got a better room. If u getting a sunset view, get 16th floor and above because the new Flamingo next decided to duplicate the Paradise design and u might find yourself with an audience. The best thing about Paradise is the VIEW. All rooms have sea view, none of that hill view nonsense like why else would you paying to stay by the sea. But school hols can be a pain with with the crowd. So if u like some quiet, stay away during school hols and finding a table for breakfast can be a irritation because lots of locals like to horde tables and linger even after finishing their breakfast though people are standing waiting with food in their plate with kids at the side. And the swimming pool, used to be so strict with pool rules with guards whistling off those who don't obey but now many sneak in with full t-shirts and shorts and even full Muslim head gears. The beach is good for a nice evening or morning stroll, swimming is not advisable because of the jellyfish thingy and speedboats and jet skis zipping about, waters ports rentals exorbitant. Now for one little bad news, if you are having breakfast and at the sausage and egg counter, watch out for a Chinese guy manning that counter sometimes, he is apparently the cook and he has terrible dive attitude, he is under some delusion that he is a celebrity chef . Gordon Ramsay may run Hell's Kitchen and swear at his staff but this Chinese guy is Hell itself and swears at hotel guests for petty little things. We did call the manager to complain and apparently we were not the only ones but the hostess says he is always like that so why the hell is he still there spoiling guests' paying holidays??? He behaves like he is handing out free food from his pocket..very very super RUDE! So that is my fair review of the place. Would i go back? Yes because love the separate living hall concept and love the sea view plus quite near to other eating places. Nice but a bit pricey Indian restaurant across the road, if you go further in you'll find a decent bakery, mini market and decent eateries so food is not a problem. We got our pizza with free voucher at Ga ya, it was amazing! So happy hols!

Room Tip: Ask for 16th floor and above and for higher numbers, e.g 1610 has a better seaview than 1605 because...

this hotel is in the tanjung bungah area , half way between georgetown and the main tourist beach of ferringhi, so its a quiet part , but only a short distance from the city of georgetown, for shopping ( check out "gama" dept store for bargains) and exploring, the hotel had many attractions and events , but i found the staff to be some of the friendliest i have encountered over many years of travelling, facilities were clean and well maintained,i will one day return and stay here again i,m sure, hope you enjoy it like i did , ...john ..

Room Tip: my room was on the 17th floor so the view was excellent from the balcony , try for a high floor, the...

To make the point right in the first line: the hotel is good value for money. For £41 I got a large studio suite, a beautiful view of the beach and the Tanjung Bungah area (from the 21st floor on a large balcony). It is not a luxury resort, but is good quality, clean, and friendly.

The basics:

Location: Tanjung Bungah is one of the beach neighbourhoods in Penang. It is not very pedestrian friendly, but there are restaurants and food courts around the hotel, and you can easily take a bus (101 or 102) from the hotel door, which will take you all the way to the city center (in about 20 minutes), or even the airport (102) - given the traffic in Penang, I would expect that journey to take about 1 day or 2...

Beach: Don't expect any sort of paradise here. The beach is a 500 meters stretch of mostly white sand, shared between this hotel, the nearby Flamingo, and a few houses. The sea is not very inviting. There are signs warning about jellyfish. It feels like what it is: a city beach. Not worse or better than anyone. Clean enough for a quick dip, if you feel like. However, if you subscribe to my theory that any beach is better than no beach, then this will do.

Room: A surprisingly large, clean and comfortable room. Since it is on the 21st floor and has a large balcony overlooking the sea, it feels fresh, and airy. It has a separate "kitchen like" area, except that there are no microwaves, hot plates or anything. So it is kind of useless. There are some other rooms with kitchens, if that interests you.

Service: Very friendly (as it is the case anywhere in Malaysia), and again, as it is the norm here, the standard of English far better than Thailand.

Wi-fi: not in room, but available on the lobby. If you need to work though, the lobby won't do it: it is hot and there are no desks. The solution is to request a ethernet cable and go wired.

Breakfast: Standard asian hotel breakfast: all sorts of noodles, rice, chicken sausage, and the western breads, croissants, omelettes, etc. The service in the restaurant is also very good: one morning I had a conference call that went over the breakfast time, but they went out of their way to bring back part of the already closed buffet just for me. Nice touch.

The "resort": The name resort is the most overused one in the travel industry, and it is no exception here. This is a hotel in front of a so-so beach, with a pool and a couple of restaurants: doesn't really qualify as a resort. But then, who cares? The place actually has a quaint feel of a beach front hotel in Miami circa 1970, with few shops in the basement, an ageing looking pool, and the age of the average guest hitting 100 years.

All in all, I liked the Rainbow. Calling it a "Paradise Beach Resort" is a stretch, but then, if you know that Penang is not a beach paradise place, and that you are paying less than £50 for a very good hotel, you know what you are in for. I highly recommend both Penang and the hotel.

Final tip: This is the second visit to Penang - and the place has grown in just 3 years. Traffic is impossible. Our flight arrived in Penang at 17:30 (rush hour). Easily give yourself 2 hours to navigate from the airport to the hotel. On the way back, our flight left at 10am, so I wanted to be at the airport at 8am. Left the hotel at 7am, barely made there at 8:05 am. So, be prepared: it is a small place with big city traffic (although very civilised).

The taxi from the airport (booked and pre-paid from a booth outside the terminal) is about MYR 55 (£ 13). The taxi from the hotel to the airport (booked by the concierge) is the same price.

I booked and paid for this hotel more than 7 months ago and on arrival at about 12 noon the receptionist told me that because you are early and that they have an (Zurich)insurance company conference here we can not get into our room untill at least 5.30 pm because thats when the conference finishes and they check out (Note check out time 3.00pm) that they will have to down grade my room. I was disgusted and complained to no avail and I have a child under 2 years old so couldn't wait tht long if it was 3.00 pm maybe.
(I can't believe the recption would even tell me that they had to down grade my room)
Apart the room room was OK but nothing fancey size was good but I don't understand why they have a kitchen with no stove or microwave or plates etc. its a wasted space, would be much better if put in lounge chairs.
Bathroom showing its age clean but not pleasant on the eyes, watch out for the plastic drain on the floor right next door to the toilet where a male stands to go put my foot straight throug and cut the heel of my foot (sore for 2 weeks). Bathroom towels disgusting that old and worn and if you have a child shareing you think they could give an extra towel.
We had the noisest air conditioner woke us up many times.
The wardrobe was falling apart on the draws.
Now for food we had the BBQ buffet at Gaya's beach side bar it was only fair all the salads were bought out about an hour before it started and salads were not that cold and the meat was pre cooked and then later placed on a very low flame on the BBQ not even warmed up, It would have tasted nice if cooked fresh and hot.
The next night we went to Gaya's beach side bar and had a look but didn't like anything on the menu so we decided to go to planters lounge not much of a selection there also but we ordered and then realized it was cooked at gaya's resturant anyway and by the time it got to us it was cold.
Breakfast buffet was not that great scrabled eggs & fried eggs were pre cooked sitting in a cold bowl and more catering for the locals and poor set up it was like cattle in a feed lot.
The best part was the pool area nice and shaded as you can't swim at the beach , I watch one of the locals skimming jelly fish out of the ocean (Lots)
If you like to walk not a good area you can't walk far up the beach, man made obstacles.

Room Tip: Ask for new airconditioner of room
