Owner description: At Hafrsfjord we find the monument Swords in Rock. It was here Harald Harfagre fought a battle that united Norway into one kingdom in 872 AD. The monument represents peace, unity and freedom. The Viking swords' hilts are modelled on swords found in various parts of the country. The monument was made by Friz Roed (1928-2002) and unveiled by King Olav in 1983. The monument can be reached by bus nr. 29 from the centre of Stavanger.

In terms of the history of what the swords represent, its worth a look. The location isnt very far out of town if you have a car and probably not too bad on a bike.

I felt the information about the monument lended a little too much towards the architect who made it, instead of the actual history of what it represents and as such, the location whilst nice could have been a bit nicer in terms of trying to showcase Norway and more of its wonderful history.

Well, an interesting view actually: three 10-meter swords stuck vertically into a mountain. They say, these make a great look at the sunset. Also there's a good place for swimming near the swords. To get there you can take a bus 29 from the bus stop 29 or 32 (20 min ride). The stops are located around the lake ('Byparken' on the map), but they are set in a very confusing way, so we couldn't find the right stop(

I built these into a run and ended up stopping there for a bit. Not only are they impressive but the view is good too.

Big Swords in a small place. The sea was iced so we could thew stones over the surface to see how far they arrived. Best thing are the views from there and the huge size of the swords.

The swords are neat, but no big deal. But we rented bicycles in Stavanger Visitors Center near the main harbor in town ( approx $50 US for the day per bike) and rode EXCELLENT trails. We took a 30 km circular ride which went through small communities, fields and the last half was along the water. Minor hills only. A great full day trip to see the swords, as one of may sites along the way.
