Owner description: A Dynamic Museum for a Dynamic IndustryNorwegian Petroleum Museum is a museum for everyone. Its exhibits explain how oil and gas are created, disovered and produced, and what they are used for. The museum also provides informastion about technological advances and the way petroleum influences Norwegian society. Original objects, models, films and interactive exhibits illustrate everything from everyday life offshore to technology and dramatic incidents. The curious cat Petro serves as a guide through the museum's science centre. The museum was designed by architects Lunde & Løvseth, and is an attraction in itself. Its architecture is a scenographic interpretation of the Norwegian bedrock, the open coastal landscape and the offshore oil installations. Architechtural reviews have said that there is hardly a building in Norway which signals its function as obviously as the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. The museum was opened in 1999.

Working in the Oil and Gas idustry I was a bit worried about going to a museum on the same subject but I was very pleasantly suprised.

Although it looks small on the outside there is so much quality material in the museum time absolutely flew by. This would suit people of all backgrounds, nothing was patronising or over complicated and there were lots of interactive things to do.

I would certainly go back again.

Spent three hours in the Petroleum museum and had a very informative and enjoyable time. All exhibits were well described, and there was a good mix of models, interactive displays, and experiences. The building architecture as well, as with most Scandinavian design, is impressive in itself, with the three outside "rig legs", (where the rig experience is contained) add a lot to it as well. A good half day out.

The organized visit was on Monday so the restaurant and the shops in the museum were closed like most of the other shows, servers were down so no show of the history of geology and no movies of the diving techniques used in the history in north see, it was a petty because I think those we're major attraction in the museum.

Excellent interactive experience, mountains of information and exhibits. The 3D replicas and models are superb. Great location on the water, well worth it!

Generally Im not one for Museum's where you have to stand and read a lot, but I found the history of Norwegian oil exploration very interesting, it is quiet a visual experience as well with plenty of life like models and movies on display, if your visiting Stavanger, and find a day when it is raining, this is a place to book into and lose yourself for a few hours, I really think kids would enjoy this place and there is quiet alot of interaction on some displays. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and I think the highlight is the 3d movie at the end, very well done.
