Owner description: A Dynamic Museum for a Dynamic IndustryNorwegian Petroleum Museum is a museum for everyone. Its exhibits explain how oil and gas are created, disovered and produced, and what they are used for. The museum also provides informastion about technological advances and the way petroleum influences Norwegian society. Original objects, models, films and interactive exhibits illustrate everything from everyday life offshore to technology and dramatic incidents. The curious cat Petro serves as a guide through the museum's science centre. The museum was designed by architects Lunde & Løvseth, and is an attraction in itself. Its architecture is a scenographic interpretation of the Norwegian bedrock, the open coastal landscape and the offshore oil installations. Architechtural reviews have said that there is hardly a building in Norway which signals its function as obviously as the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. The museum was opened in 1999.

The Norwegian Petroleum Museum does a great job in providing the history of Norwegian oil from the geological evolution to the industry's development in the country. The exhibit actually extends over the water as a realistic experience in an oil platform. The 12-minute diver's experience and the 3-D video are worth the time. There is mention of the environmental impact but it is given as short a shrift as one might expect. Overall, worth the 100 NOK and time.

A very interesting museum with lots to see. It never gets boring! Perfect with kids too, as there are also interactive areas and a very cool playground made of things all related to the oil industry!

Very interesting museum with loads of interactive exhibits and lots of fun activities for everybody young and old. Everything is in Norwegian and English. The cafe served the best coffee (and cheapest in Norway!) and was packed with locals which shows how good the food is.

Normally none of us would have had any interest in this subject but it was raining so we went in. What a brilliant surprise! The visuals and explanations were superb. We were able to climb into a deep sea life raft and take the 'controls' on an oil rig. The different films including one in 3D were also excellent. The models of the rigs gave a good sense of perspective. You could even throw yourself down an escape chute if you felt so inclined!
Everything was in English so no difficulties there.
We were on a cruise but visited this attaction independantly.
We would 100% recommend this attraction something for everyone.

This is a fantastic museum, don't be put off by the subject! It is very up to date with fantastic interactive exhibits and films in both Norwegian and English, tracing the history of the earth, discovery of oil in the North Sea and how important the fields are to Norway and the World. I thought I would be bored but it so well and differently presented that, even though I have no attention span!, I was there for 2 and a half hours without realising it.
A great family day out, especially if its wet, which it often is!
The coffee was the best and cheapest in Norway, you can tell its good by the amount of Norwegians eating there and yes, free Wifi.
Highly recommended for families.
