We (couple with 4 year old daughter) arrived after a flight to Bergen and then coach to Oppedal where the cabin owner (Eldar) collected us by car before taking us to the cabin. This is a good option as hiring a car looked expensive and would have been used very little as we intended to relax, have fun and just walk in the local area. Norweigan public transport is very good and reasonably priced so proved a wise move.

Booked on seeing pictures of the cabins and reading previous reviews. We had wanted to visit Scandanavia for a while and Norway seemed a good choice as we hoped a February visit would provide snow for how we imagined it 'should' be! We were not disapointed as we had snow throughout our 5 night stay yet the temperature was mild for the time of year at around 0C. We had been expecting it to be far colder so were certainly not cold with the clothes we had brought with us!

We stayed in the large log cabin which was very spacious, warm and beautiful. Underfloor heating in all but the two bedrooms was great and the log fire really made the evenings special. Everything we needed was in the kitched and bathroom and the friendly owners even lent us a laptop, hairdryer and toys for our daughter during our stay.

The view over Sognefjord is magnificient, some days complimented by a blue sky others were striking with snow clouds rolling in. We wandered the nearby area as best we could with a 4 year old! Up a trail into the forest and another to a frozen lake all so tranquil and peaceful. We were lent sledges by the owners for our daughter (well we did have a go too...) which she adored.

Walked to the local shop (run by the mother of Eldar who was helpful and friendly) and bought some provisions which were delivered later on in the day to our cabin. The selection was very good, especially considering how small a population lives in Ortnevik.

Returned by ferry to Nordeide before taking an express boat to Bergen. Then went by train to Oslo which we highly recommend especially the initial part of the journey as it is very spectacular.

Really could not fault anything, even the weather played to plan. The whole stay was truly memorable and we are so glad we visited the special Ortnevik.

Stayed in the big cabin for one week end of April-May. We were just two, (the cabin can hold 8-10) but appreciated the extra space and the views from the gorgeous windows. The Brekke's are more than helpful. One of us was sick, and they found doctor's appointments, and gave otc medicines to help. Even helped try to track down a lost pair of sunglasses! Really well equipped cabins, clean, and warm. Tons of equipment to borrow (bikes, fishing rods, endless DVDs), very detailed travel arrangements, and local hike information. The local store in the village isn't overpriced, and has a modest selection of food. It's the perfect place if you really do want to "get away from it all."
We got along perfectly fine without a car, but it could be a different case for families with small children (the walk to the store can be a long one, although Kirsti's happy to bring the food home for you at the end of the day, as she's the cabin owner's mother- a very nice option!!)
We had a truly fantastic stay, despite the illness, and wholeheartedly recommend it.

Room Tip: Get the big cabin if you like lots of space, there are two separate rooms, and a loft with 5 foam mattresses. (We didn't even use the extra ones, but were told at the time of booking that the stone cabin, which we originally wanted, was booked) We were in the wood cabin briefly, it was nice and cozy, but a bit two claustrophobic for a couple who appreciates their own space from time to time :)

I planned this Christmas holiday, without my partner knowing where we would be going. He was so nicely surprised, that we are thinking of doing the same thing next year. The only problem is that we both agree that it will be almost impossible to find such a perfect location and accommodation again. The Fjord landscape is really unique, with its mountains rising almost straight out of the water into steep hillsides; and the Brekke's cabins provided the perfect home, from which we could appreciate this.

We had initially hoped to do plenty of day hikes, but the weather wasn't so optimal to do this. We had also hoped for a white christmas, but got 10 days of rain with only 2 "dry" days- and no snow. This unfortunate (and unusual for this time of year) weather didn't stop us from enjoying the beautiful views around the Fjord. During our stay we explored most of the trails that go through Ortnevik- but taking our time- and went fishing in the rain! I think the very short daylight time (about 9 to 3) and the longer hours of darkness made for a very special atmosphere. You can't "do" as much in the day, so you have to slow down and do less. We didn't try to plan in too much for the day (also because of rain) and so ended up taking our time walking and enjoyed the scenery. It was so nice at the end of the day to come back to a warm (floor heating was great!) cabin and be able to cook a warm meal. The stone cabin itself is really nice and cosy. We also spent a few days in the wood cabin. Both cabins are wonderful and I would love to stay in either one again. But I have to say that the fireplace in the wood cabin really was a bonus- especially at this time of year, when it gets dark so early and we found it very relaxing in the evening to watch the fire burning. Otherwise both cabins had everything we needed- such as cooking ustensils and warm showers.

All the members of the Brekke family that we met (Heidi, Eldar, Anders and Kristi) gave us a warm welcome and they each helped us with our queries and questions throughout our stay. Heidi was extremely helpful in the period prior to arrival, replying to my many questions. Altogether we spent 11 nights in Ortnevik and really wish it had been longer. We were shocked how quickly the time went by and hope that we will one day come back- perhaps at a time of year when the mountain trails are more accessible. A stay in one of the cabins and a hot tub would be the perfect end to a 10 day trek in the mountains!

Norway had always been on our 'list of places we want to visit' and after getting married in November 2010, relaxing at home for Christmas and New Year we decided that we would look for somewhere to stay in Norway for 2 weeks in April. Purely by chance we found the brekke.net website and it was obvious that 'The Big Cabin' was exactly what we were looking for.
Approximately a 3-4 hour drive from Bergen airport, with several opportunities to stock up on groceries and tasty treats on the way, the drive was very straight-forward (basically just follow the road) and gave us our first taste of the spectacular Norwegian landscape. As we arrived in April the Mountain Pass was still closed but we hope to return in the warmer months so we can get the full experience. When we arrived at the cabin we were even more impressed with it than we had expected (the photos are very good but when you are there the cabin and surroundings take your breath away). Although the big cabin can accommodate 6 people comfortably my husband and I did not feel it was too big for us (although there was one bedroom that we didn't go in to). The kitchen had every facility we needed and a few that we didn't get round to using, the dishwasher was a big bonus and the washing machine in the shower-room was really handy. In addition, the under-floor heating was perfect and getting out of bed, or coming in after a short stroll to the lake and walking barefoot on warm tiles was an unexpected joy.
We were hoping for a place to relax, unwind, enjoy stunning scenery and basically take life at whatever pace we felt suited our mood - the Big Cabin, the hospitality and generosity of the Brekke family and the worlds best view from our large living room window gave us all that...and more! An apparently limitless supply of logs for the open fire ensured every evening was especially relaxing.
Our time in the big cabin was our introduction to Norway and we will definitely be back - in the summer to swim in the fjords, in the more snowy months and again in spring to watch the huge spring-melt waterfalls...basically, it's clear that this is a great spot for a break whatever time you can make it.
The information pack supplied with the cabin was incredibly valuable for planning activities such as short (and longer) walks around the cabin, excursions to the Glacier Museum etc. and ferry times to neighbouring towns.
So, if the Big Cabin is available - BOOK IT! :o)

My wife and I stayed here in July 2011 for four days. To sum it up in a word: amazing! We stayed in the wood cabin, which was cozy but plenty spacious for two people. The kitchen was modern and well-furnished and we appreciated having the wood fireplace for ambiance even if it wasn't really that cold at night. Heidi and Eldar went out of their way to make sure that we felt like friends and guests rather than just customers, they really gave the whole experience a personal touch.

We had a car, which was very convenient. I gather you can get in by ferry but it might take a while depending on where you're coming from. Once in town you don't really need a car, though, as it's very small and walkable. I would recommend stocking up on groceries before coming if there are particular things you want. The shop in town is well-stocked for a small grocery but it's not a supermarket.

We went sailing, hiked to the waterfalls nearby, tried fishing (without success but such is life!) and just generally relaxed in this wonderful place. I really can't say enough nice things about this spot, we'd go back in an instant.
