“Destitute and drunk/drug spot”

I would strongly recommend you do not use the west most part of this park (the part up the hill). It is the hang out and sleeping spot of drunks, destitute and drug users. You do need to be careful of needles and broken glass.
While the people do leave you alone, it is very uncomfortable passing through and I would recommend you avoid it. Certainly do not go into the grass/trees and people are sleeping there and you may step on something sharp.

On the bright side, beside a sleeping man was a very cute hedgehog!

Visited in May.
Having researched this park, we knew what to expect, the haunt of the drug addicts of Bergen.

On entering the park from Strømgaten we encountered several groups of people (probably addicts); however they kept themselves to themselves and I did not feel threatened (Mrs M did a bit as she controls the money!). There was a noticeable police presence during our visit.

There are several nice statues, fountains and small lakes to appreciate.

The lower part of the park is addict free and very pleasant to walk through (Mrs M was much happier). We found a propeller monument and the marina just outside the park on Thormøhlensgate.

Be brave and visit this park.

Thank andy M

This is a general alert to all those who like to wander. We took a long walk through Bergen and when we passed by the back of the botanical gardens through student centre to the Nygardsparken there were signs of disruption, rubbish everywhere. Then came the piles of used needles, empty needle wrappers and then finally a large number of people openly using heroin, once we were passed the junkie heaven we headed down the street towards the lake only to see we had hit the red light area. This not an issue in itself but if you have young children and leave the botanical gardens or nearby museums and head as we thought to a nice park area with statues, etc be aware. We were not told by any passer bys that the route we were currently on was to run the smackhead gauntlet YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
