“Excellent lunch spot in Bergen”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

We visited this restaurant during the last port day of our Norwegian Fjord Cruise.
Although expensive, mainly due to the cost of the excellent Chablis, it was well worth the money and delicious. We sat outside on the balcony which had a lovely view of the harbour and fish market. Contemporary in its decor, it has free wifi inside, a nice touch was the really lovely bread and garlic butter. We always appreciate linen napkins, as they give any restaurant an upmarket feel. Thank you for a delicious lunch.

“Magnificent meal”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

We chanced upon Sjomatskirken one early evening, and were offered an indoor table with a view. And what a vista! The view of Bryggen and Bergen harbor with the sail ship (Statsraad Lehmkul) in the background bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun couldn't have been a more spectacular setting for this memorable meal.
It was hard to decide what to eat because I found everything on the menu mouth watering. I finally settled for the fresh mussels, and took the waiter's advice and ordered the small portion. He was absolutely right: it was more than enough for one person. The meal was superb. I have only eaten mussels this fresh when I have harvested the mussels myself. The Chablis wine that he recommended was the perfect complement to the mussels. I did not have room for dessert, and ordered tea instead. My only (very minor) issue is that I would have wished for a better selection of teas.

“Great location and atmosphere. Food quality MUST improve!”
Reviewed August 25, 2013 via mobile

Probably one of the best locations in Bergen. Sjømatkirken is situated in the heart of downtown Bergen on the Zachariass Bryggen, right beside the famous Fishmarket.
From the restaurant you can enjoy a scenic view to the buzzling Fish market and the harbour. The restaurant is nicely furnished.
With this fantastic atmosphere we ordered the most expensive dish on the menu: Sjømatkirken's deluxe seafood platter.
The price was ~ 150$ each and contained the following:
1/2 Lobster, 2 oysters, 2 crabcraws, 1 scallop, kingcrab, mussels and shrimps.

We were very dissapointed when we discovered that the shrimps were not fresh. White marks on the shrimp shells prove that the shrimps have been out for a long time or they have been deiced in hot water.
The lobster was overcooked. The meat therefore was hard and tasteless.
The mussels were tasty. So was the kingcrab.

Drop the lobster if you want to try the platter. You can buy a normal seafood platter for ~ 100$ without the lobster. That's probably a much better pick.

All in all a perfect situated seafood restaurant. They need to improve their cooking and food to match their luxury prices and standard.

“Bad service”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

It was supposed to be a romantic dinner for the two of us but it turned out to be the worst dinner in Norway ever! We went more than one hour earlier to book a table and asked for a table with a good view. We finished with a table in the middle or the room with no other view than other people's table! While still eating the starters, the main dishes was already cooked and ready to be served. Then the waiter misunderstood the order and ordered more food than what was asked. Finally, the waiter was really rude at that moment, making us feeling as there was no money on the bank account whereas it was the credit card machine that wasn't working! It took him 4 trials with 2 different credit card to make him realize that it may be because of the machine! To conclude, food is really satisfying with top quality ingredients. However, service and waiters are really bad.

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

Try the luxury seafood platter to share, it is the beast deal on the menu and worth its price! Some of the freshest seafood I have come across and lots of it served in convenient (close to Bryggen) and comfortable surroundings. Option to pick you own seafood (Thai style), but would still stick with the platter as it is better value. Effective and professional service with a smile with a decent wine list (white wine could have been colder). Well worth a visit !
