I love this trip and (according to the locals) I cheat by taking the "Ulriksbanen" up to the top. Real vikings walk all the way of course. You should bring food and drink and, if you stop and smell the flowers and enjoy the view, you should expect to spend six hours or more.
The good thing about this trail is that there is an "out". If you have bitten over more than you can chew and feel you can't hike mountains any more, half-way through, when you get to "Tarlebo", you can veer left and go down a decent road through "Isdalen".
This trip is not suitable for young children, they should probably be school age before attempting it. I wold also be careful carrying children in a contraption on your back since there are areas where you might fall. Not far and not dangerously, but neither would it be pleasant for a child on your back if you landed on her.
