“Very nice hostel!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2012

We had a double room. Yes, expensive (900kr) but had a private shower and was quiet and clean. GREAT rooftop patio with view of city! Breakfast 65Kr, good value. Great location. Good common rooms, free Wifi in the common areas.

The place is really well situated in the center, visiting places close by, market... The rooms and services are clean. Kitchen, dining, lobby also clean and useful. The staff is helpful. The service internet is like ten dollars an hour...so nobody is using it (somebody should wake up, may be)
The room have many beds and many more beds...closed together. So, It is not the place for privacy. And like all knows, Norway is expensive, so in a 12 beds dorm we paid 33 dollars per bed, share bathroom; no breakfast, unless you pay another 11 dollars for it...and that big a buffet....

Great - considering the price and sharing of rooms.
I stayed in a 6 bed dorm and naturally it is not as convenient as a room for your own - but what do you expect ?
Room was clean and we had a bathroom to share.

POSITIVE ASPECTS:
The hotel is ideally located just at the corner of the fish market, and less than 2 minutes by walking of the Bryggen neighbourhood protected by UNESCO, and or the city center.

If you want, you have the possibility to book a room for 4 or 6, which is quite cool if you don't plan to spend a night in the middle of the 32 bed dormitory.

Lastly, the hotel is just next to a small supermarket opened until 22:00 every day, which is extremely convenient.

NEGATIVE SIDES:
Thestaff was polite but not particularly friendly, and not that spontaneously helping, unless you really insisted. Moreover, between 21:00 and 8:00 there is no more reception, so don't expect any answer to your potential questions or issues. This also means that people are then free to do more or less what they want, even making a lot of noise in their bedrooms.

Although I read it in old comments, the computers supposed to give access to internet were still out of order. On a similar way, it was advised not to use the kitchenettes in the bedrooms because of the sensitive fire alarms. What's the goal of them? The bathrooms in the 6 bed dormitories were also very disappointing: just a water spray and a hole in the middle of the tiles to allow the evacuation of water, which was not such an easy thing: after a 2 min shower, expect as much time to clean the flood on the floor.

Lastly, the common areas were just extremely basic: a few chairs and tables, nothing at all to make the atmosphere warmer, or incite people to speak to each other. Basically, everybody prepares his meal in the common kitchen, and one by one goes to eat it alone in the common room not even close to the kitchen.

If you think that such rooms were relatively expensive for a youth hostel, the only good reason to spend a night there according to me, would be that such dormitories are still less expensive that the hotels next door...

It's quite a good place, clean and recently refurbished rooms. It's located just nearby the fish market and that's a really good thing. The cost is an average for Norway and it offers to its visitors a living room, and a kitchen. There's wifi and a code to access on night time. Polite people at reception. Good place to stay!

1. YMCA is right in the centre, 20m walk from flybus & tourist office, fish market,
2. it has small kitchen, lounge room, dining room,
3. it has a elevator, lift,
4. staff are helpful ( if you persist and explain clearly) they do know English,
5. note short winter reception hours,
6. bunpriss supermarket opposite,
7. rooms clean tidy,
8 double ensuite rooms have small fridge, small 2 burner stove for simple meals,

I read other comments - this is competitive priced with cooking, for Norway & Bergen - buying meals in Norway restaurants is 4 x 5x USA $- so YMCA provides appropriate accommodation for cost conscious/restrained travellers. It really is the only budget central venue.
we stayed 4 nights, It is about 500m walk to railstation. 50m to main shopping.
harbour can be seen from balcony.

Room Tip: Ask for level 4 - there is a roof balcony.

LIke everyone else mentioned the location is great. However, if you want your body feel like its been broken this is the place to stay in! Their beds are really horrible! they mattresses are too thin so you feel every single metal bar. The staff is really unfriendly and actually did not tell us much. They actually forgot to mentioned that there is a code to get into the building after 9pm which would seem important. SO we had to deal with security people to get in, really unnecessary stress. Worst part, you actually have to pay a lot for this place!
