4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2011

We stayed here for one night in July 2011. Good location and has character. Rooms comfortable with nice views. The hostess is very friendly and helpful. Good breakfast. Very good value for money in a very expensive country. Beautiful spot but it was wet as it appears to be most of the time.

We totally loved this hotel!! Very cozy and nice and central in Bergen. Wonderful staff/owners. Great breakfast. We would choose this hotel again - it actually feels like a home away from home! Actually we might go to Bergen again just to stay at Skansen! :-)

Room Tip: The balcony room is the best :)

Norway is known to be expensive so it's no surprise that a single room with only a sink inside and the bathroom and shower down the hall will run you over a hundred bucks. But still, this place was well worth the value as the breakfast was fantastic and provided enough nutrition to last you through to dinner. The room itself was fairly large, had a good view and warmed up nicely with the radiator. The downstairs sitting room is a great place to hang out with friends, drink, eat or just read a bit. There are free umbrellas to borrow, as it will definitely rain during your stay there.

Of note, be ready to walk up some steep streets to get here. And make sure you know exactly where the pension is, since the surrounding streets are like a maze and you will spend hours wandering all over if you get lost.

We stayed at Skansen for 3 nights in October. The stay didn't start off well but progressively got better. There wasn't anyone to check us in and we had to yell quite a bit before someone came along. We booked the 1 bedroom apartment which was at the bottom of the B&B. It got us a bit edgey (especially since the room was right next to a downward slope where passers by can easily look into the room. But it got better when we realised that lots of people live on ground floor apartments in Bergen anyway and we also started getting used to our room. Subsequently, we also heard that the owners were away on holiday which was why we did not get to experience the warmth of the B&B that everyone here spoke about.

Overall we were very satisfied with Skansen Pensjonat on the following factors:
- great breakfast spread: loads of bread roll, various types of cheese, pickles, coffee, tea, milk, orange juice and eggs prepared freshly every morning by the server who comes in early. When we had to leave before breakfast time, the server arranged for a takeaway pack of bread (generous spread of cheese & ham) & OJ for us
- great location: it's located uphill which gives a great bird's eyeview of the Bryggen city. It's a 15 mins walk from the Bergen train terminal to the bottom of the furnicular and then about 5-10 mins to Skansen (using the shortcut staircase) and a bit more if you have to drag your luggage zigzag up the steep slope. From the bottom of the furnicular, it's only a 10 mins walk to the Bryggen UNESCO warehouses.
- free tea, coffee & biscuits placed in the dining room throughout the day which was very helpful especially since everything in Norway is so expensive!
- the 1 bedroom apartment comes equipped with a stove and microwave oven which helped us save quite a bit of money as we started cooking our own dinners. Pls note that you shld not expect a room equivalent to the standards of a 5 star hotel as this is a B&B afterall but it is clear that the owners take pride in keeping the B&B clean and peaceful.

The old Bryggen area is generally safe and charming so I would highly recommend a visit to Bryggen and to stay at Skansen :)

Tip #1 for avid climbers, hikers going to Bryggen, note that the roads from Skansen Pensjonat connect all the way to the top of the furnicular. It's a good 40-50 mins climb but it was absolutely refreshing for the husb and me. We saw lots of Norwegians jogging and exercising in the woods in the evening

Tip #2: There is a seafood place at the Fish Market which opens late into the night. It serves a pretty decent fish n chip (cod fish) and loads of seafood. We found it a lot cheaper than eating at restaurants

Tip #3: Narvesens (the norwegian equivalent of a 7-11) sells hotdogs for 19krn - the cheapest hot dog eat in Norway!

Above the fenicular station this is a great find in Bergen. The views of the city are great day and night. We stayed in the balcony room. Very clean, comfortable bed and friendly service. Bathroom is shared. Breakfast was great. Great value.

My daughter and I (and a friend and her daughter) took our first trip to Norway and stayed in the Sven and Yonnika's guest house our first night of our trip and our last two nights in Bergen. In Norway we also stayed in a beautiful cabin in Flam and a fantastic historical hotel in Balestrand. However, the Skansen Pensjonat Guest House was equally as comfortable and fun to stay in as our other locations - with the best value! Our location was within an easy walk to the train station, the ferry docks, the fish market and downtown Bergen with all the shopping you could do in a day! We did not have a car and had no troubles getting around in Bergen or walking to the trian station to Flam or the ferry to Bergen. I would not attempt the walks, however, if you are no in shape as the hills and lack of elevators would make it difficult for some. Sven and Yonnika were kind, accomodating and wonderful. The breakfasts were fantastic and we slept very well - in great comfort every night! Sven also kindly and informatively answered our many emails before we even came to Norway. He gave us tips and suggestions and was always quick in his responses and helpful in suggestions. We loved staying at their Pensjonat and would recommend it to any travelers in Bergen. Thanks again Sven and Yonnika! Sandy, Jenny, Becky and Jenny :)

It paid to have early reservations, we got the best room in town with a nice view of town. The steep cobblestone road/sidewalk was worth the breathtaking view and the stay in this B&B. Breakfast was plenty with afternoon tea available. We stayed in the balcony room with lots of space and a balcony to sit and enjoy the view and sunny afternoon. Even a robe was in the room.
Very friendly hosts that spoke English well. They kept our suitcases after check out.
