Grand Hotel Terminus
Ranked #20 of 50 Hotels in Bergen
Reviewed December 17, 2013

We wanted to find a hotel close to the Bergen Railway station, since we had an early start for the Norway in a Nutshell tour. This hotel it directly across a small laneway - you can't get any closer! That being said, there isn't much to see in the immediate vicinity.

The hotel does not have its own carpark, which it makes clear on its website, so I wasn't surprised. The check-in staff were very helpful in giving me directions to a large multi-level carpark at the nearby shopping centre (it ended up costing us NOK 340 after 3 nights parked there). They also were emphatic that I should not park in the smaller carpark that I had seen next door - aparently it wasn't very secure.

We had two rooms (210 and 209), which I thought were on different sides of the 2nd floor lobby, until I noticed the open door... they are interconnected.

Room 210 (a Junior Suite) is the larger of the two, with a double bed (which could be separated - except our request for that to be done went unresolved during our stay, which was a shame). It also has a 4 chair dining table and 2 lounge chairs with a coffee table.

Room 209 was a little smaller (Double Deluxe room), with 2 single beds, 2 lounge chairs and a coffee table.

The rooms look out over the railway station, which isn't as dull as it sounds. There are glimpses of mountains and the large windows make the rooms feel even more luxurious. Although the floor-to-ceiling window in the bathroom of Room 210 is a little disconcerting (definitely keep the curtain shut!).

As far a dining, for dinner your only option in the hotel consists of the bar. While the choices were limited (and it was short-staffed), the food was lovely.

The breakfast buffet (included) was nice. It had a range of cereals, cold & hot items and a number of different drinks options. Over the days we were there, it became aparent that there were some standard items and then a number of specials each day.

The guest laundry was at the end of the hall on the 2nd floor. Once we'd deciphered the Norwegian instructions, it was easy to use - and free.

Whilst I didn't see the conference facilities in operation, there were a number of conferences running while we were there.

Since our primary focus was on the Norway in a Nutshell tour, the Hotel Grand Terminus was perfect for us. Plus we didn't mind the walk in to the heart of Bergen (and to the Hanseatic Wharf).

I spent a night because I had to fly early the next morning. Even though, I really enjoy the night there. The hotel is excellent, only 2 minutes walking from the bus station and just in front of the train station. You need only 5 minutes to be at Bergen city centre.
It has a beautiful bar to enjoy a proper whiskey and a light dinner. Prices are quite expensive, but think...you are in Norway.
There was a Christmas party at night, so I delayed my sleep until 23:30 but this is exceptional for these days.!

This is one of the most traditional hotells in Bergen centraly located next door to the railway station. It is a member of the historic hotels of Norway. Small bedrooms but clean and modern. Good kitchen that could be very much better with some small changhes, such as coking poptatoes long enaugh and making real brown gravy with real taste. Dilicious breakfast , full english style. Included different pastry. The whiskey-bar is an extra reason to choose this hotel.

Thanks a lot for your review and for your praise of our breakfast, kitchen and Terminus Whisky Bar. Regarding room size, we do have rooms in three categories, standard, de luxe and junior suites and it cost only NOK 200 to upgrade.
We have seen your comments about some of the elements in your dish and we can assure you tha everything we serve are made the original way without any shortcuts. We take pride in serving food of high quality with the best of local ingrediences.
We also mention that we start renovating the whisky bar monday the 16th of December and we will open a brand new bar counter and new food concept the 10th of January.

We stayed here on two occasions, before and after a cruise. We were happy with tis hotel. The location was convenient to the flybussen (airport bus). The hotel was a grand old style. The rooms were spacious, the bathrooms big. There wasn't a kettle as one reviewer said, but they directed me to a service section on the second floor that had washing machine, dryer, kettles, microwave. Breakfast was good, The atmosphere was dry, like many heated places, but the plus of this was any washing we did dried like a charm. Staff were very helpful too, and pointed out the shopping malls, ordered taxis for us. There is complimentary coffee and tea on the ground floor.

Grand and beautiful. We stayed in the junior suite and there were no shampoo or any toiletries provided. The only thing was a wall mounted soap pump in the shower with unknown content. For a place like like, it's a shame that at small selection of nice toiletries aren't provided.

We also missed a kettle and some tea/coffee in the room. You can go downstairs and get this, but that's not exactly the same.

The breakfast is nice and has a wide selection with options for everyone. Included vegetarians. The menu in the restaurant is less exciting, but you can have a pizza or some salads.

The radiators are behind radiator covers, and to adjust the temperature - you have to squeeze your hand in between the gap, really tricky.

Overall, it's a great hotel and I hope they will make these small changes to make it even better.

Thanks a lot for your detailed review. We will absolutely consider your suggestions. The hotel's guest soap is of high quality and the pump solution is a result of our environmental friendly operation program. We do have kettels to bring to your room and we offer free coffee and tea 24 H. Our à la carte offer is for the moment an informal and inexpensive concept. In January 2014 we are looking forward to present a renewed lounge and Whisky Bar with an expanded menu offer.

stayed for 4N in a nice airy room with high ceilings, openable windows and nice old-world charm. internet worked fine, so did hot water. breakfast had ample selection including interesting norwegian dishes. this place has a nice location relatively close to the cable car, next to the railway station. only downside was that the lobby bar closes early. counter staff were nice and helpful. would go again if going to bergen!
